  • Fun and More Fun in Ecuador

“I had a fantastic time. The guide (Jessica) was a charming eloquent individual. My companions were interesting and cool people. The wild life was a gas. My only problem was that equator sun. I'm a red head and didn't put enough sun screen on my face and looked like I was attacked by a jaguar at the end.”

  • “We had a fabulous time. Our guide, Jessica, was amazing. She was extremely versed in all aspects of the trip. A walking encyclopedia!”

  • A trip to remember

“I have always wanted to go to Patagonia, but wasn't sure I could do it alone. So I signed up with Active Adventure, a decision I certainly did not regret. The scenery was incredible, my traveling companions lots of fun, and the trip well organized and planned out. It was great to have all the logistics taken care of, so we could simply enjoy all that Patagonia had to offer. To top it off, our guide Cynthia was absolutely amazing and made the trip even better!”

  • Patagonia Mania

“I was not entirely sure what to expect from this trip. I had only seen pictures of Torres del Paine. This was an adventure of a lifetime. The scenery is amazing, the hikes are challenging and the culture is unique. Active is a wonderful company. Our guide, Cynthia, was absolutely amazing. Everything was well organized, we didn't have to worry about food and lodging... we could just concentrate on the hikes and the scenery. Dining was a great experience, ranging from hearty meals at the refugios, to delicious beef and lamb dinners at local restaurants. I highly recommend this trip.”

  • Really happy we did the land based tour

“This trip exceeded our expectations. I am so happy that we went on this trip via land vs. sea. This way we were able to learn about the local communities that help ensure the longevity and beauty of the area. Our guide, Pablo, made the trip excellent. His knowledge and love of the area is infectious.”

  • Patagonia 2014

“Active has once again provided us with an excellent trip. Having done Active trips in Peru and New Zealand, we had no doubts that this was going to be a great trip. I can't say enough about the guides, Cynthia and Jay. Cynthia's skill, dedication, and organization was remarkable. Jay was a skillful leader and comedian on the W hike. The young man who was our hiking guide at Chalten was also very knowledgable about the geology of the area, making it all the more interesting. We had some of the best and most beautiful hiking ever, and enjoyed delicious meals at a variety of restaurants when staying at hotels. The glacier walk was less impressive for our group, probably because it was cut short due to time. The mountain bike ride should have been more clearly described beforehand. It was clearly not for inexperienced bikers.”

  • Trip to the bottom of the earth

“Just returned from an amazing trip to the bottom of the earth. Grateful for the entire experience of trekking, glacier hikes, good friends, good wine and overwhelmingly beautiful scenery in every direction.”

  • Great Mother-Daughter trip

“The Active Adventures trip turned out to be a wonderful once in a life time event for my daughter and me. We were able to enjoy the beauty of Patagonia, face the challenges of backpacking, ice hiking, kayaking and biking and not have the worry of planning and scheduling and coordinating! Our group was fun, supportive and positive minded, and our guides were fantastic.”
    – Arizona, United States Condor, March 2014
  • Must see Galapagos

“This is my second trip with Active and I have not been disappointed. I must say the guides were very knowledgeable, informative and not to mention easy on the eyes. Being from a small island myself I was pleasantly surprised by the culture, history and the pride the people of the Galapagos Islands have. I will recommend to my friends.”

  • Loved Patagonia - more hiking!

“This was a wonderful trip. The scenery and hiking is everything that I expected and more. Kayaking on Lago Grey and ice hiking on Grey Glacier were highlights. Hotels were comfortable and restaurants were well chosen with excellent food choices. Our trip leader was professional, friendly, and made the trip seem effortless. A few tweaks to the itinerary, including adding another day of hiking, would bring this to a 5 star trip.”
    – Wisconsin, United States Condor, March 2014
  • Fantastic

“It was a superb trip and great experience: incredible landscapes and nature, great history and architecture, warm and welcoming people, grand food. The various activities enabled us to appreciate and enjoy Peru and its people, and the superior guiding of Elder really made the difference.”

  • So much fun stuff in one week!

“Mountains, then Jungle, then back to the mountains. This sums up Tapir. Everyday I found myself challenged and had fun doing it. A MUST for anyone who wants an active trip in Ecuador.”
    – New York, United States Tapir, March 2014
  • Don't see the islands from a boat...

“I didn't want to see Galapagos islands from a cruise boat. I wanted to stay on the islands and mingle with the locals...both human and otherwise. This trip did just that.”

  • Unforgettable Patagonian Adventure

“After booking our Condor trip I spent 6 months buying clothing and equipment so I would be prepared for all weather and hiking conditions. Patagonia is known for its unpredictable episodes of intense wind and rain. Your packing list was extensive, but I felt fully prepared to layer for each hike which allowed me to take in the sheer beauty of my surroundings in comfort. After a long climb to the bases of Fitz Roy and Los Cuernos, we could only look in awe at the beauty that lay before us! Sebastian, our guide, was efficient, organized and caring. He made our safety a top priority, and with humor and surprise treats, went out of his way to make this trip an unforgettable Patagonian adventure.”

  • Condor January 26th

“This was an awesome trip! Sebatian was absolutely fabulous and really made the trip memorable. He paid attention to each of us, and made sure that we all got something special along the way that he knew was meaningful. That kind of attention and thoughtfulness is really what made this trip special. I will recommend the Condor trip to anyone intrepid enough to go to the end of the world!”

  • 1/26/14 Condor Trip with Sebastian

“Amazing scenery - rigorous hiking - Sebastian was well organized and kept us on track!”
    – California, United States Condor, February 2014
  • Patagonia 1-26-2014

“I would actually rate the trip a 4.5. There are a few trips of a lifetime and this is a must see. Had our group not been as large and diverse, I would have rated it a 5. We had unseasonably good weather and I can see why National Geographic rated Patagonia one of the top 10 most beautiful places in the world. The Active trip covers the highlights very well, without rushing the sights. Our guide Sebastian was a great ambassador for his country and I couldn't have asked for better. He is knowledgeable, competent, kind, fun and knows how to handle a vast array of personalities and abilities - letting each traveler get the most out of their trip. I would highly recommend both Active and this trip in particular.”
    – Michigan, United States Condor, February 2014
  • Just Amazing!

“I could not have asked for a better trip! Being from a big city, I wanted an active escape into nature. The Active Condor trip provided all that and more. Our guide Sabastian was always going out of his way to ensure everybody was having a good time and that everything was seamless. This was a perfect trip for a single traveler. By the end of our two weeks we felt as part of a family and now I have friends from all over the world. A big thanks to everybody at Active for truly making this a trip of a lifetime!”

  • Postscript

“On my journey home from Patagonia I sat next to the window on the flight from Punta Arenas to Santiago and peered out at the mountains below. Waves of turbulent rock pierced frothy clouds. There was the great Southern Chile ice field, flowing glaciers and icy lakes. I had to pinch myself - I WAS THERE!”
    – New York, United States Condor, February 2014
  • Condor with Sebastian

“This was truly everything I expected and more. This was a fantastic active adventure. The wild wind of Patagonia blew into my heart. Sebastian is a real asset to your trip. He effortlessly organized all the details so that we could just enjoy the trip without a care. We kept saying to him, you are working so hard, how can you do this all, he would reply "I love it" and I believe him, he loves his work and does it well. I don't know who your other leaders are, but we are glad Sebastian led our group.”
    – California, United States Condor, February 2014

  • Jaguar Dec-Jan

“As if the views were not spectacular enough, every location we went, we got to know our local guides who gave us incredible insight into the Peruvian culture and spirit. Local people were so proud of their homes, farms and families. They were eager to show us that pride, answer all of our questions, make us feel comfortable. I was very humbled by how hard these people work and how happy they are. A breath of fresh air!”

  • Consider renaming the company "Cynthia Adventures"

“The trip was very well planned, providing a smooth, comfortable and relaxing (while active!) experience. But the real jewel of the trip was our guide, Cynthia - you have the best active adventure guide on our pale blue dot working for your company. We can't wait to take another trip with Active, and we'll be seeking her out specifically!”

  • Hiking Inca Trail is Excellent Four Days

“Challenging but fun, educational, and inspiring. We saw MANY amazing Inca sites. Never imagined that those mountains could support such a huge and busy civilization. The genius involved in developing the systems is astounding. The scenery is truly magnificent. Loved learning about the native flora and fauna. The Amazon was fascinating as well, and we were super lucky to get glimpses of river otters. The drive up to the Altiplano was most interesting. My least favorite spot was the Uros Islands, which while interesting in construction, did not seem to remain an authentic culture, but mostly a tourist attraction. However our subsequent trip to Taquile and Amantani were delightful.”
    – Maryland, United States Jaguar, January 2014
  • Inca Trail Trek, Peru

“My family and I have traveled with Active before and really enjoyed it. When looking for your groups to go to South America we immediately decided on Active. The trip was amazing! Being a teenager, it was to share my experiences with my friends when we got back home! My family and I went on the Inca Trail trek. While hiking on the first day, I was amazed with the scenery! No picture can show the beauty of the mountains and valleys! It was amazing to turn the corner and see Inca ruins throughout the hike! On the second day, the views got even better! Also the feeling of accomplishment when I reached Dead Women's Pass at 14,000 feet was great! The third day was one of my favorites. Though it is the longest day of hiking, the Inca ruins were amazing! Also at lunch it was amazing to see the back of Machu Picchu mountain! It was really exciting to know we were that close! On the last day, we reached Machu Picchu! I was so happy to be there! By hiking there I felt like I earned my right to be there! I would not have had the same satisfaction that I had by hiking the 4 days to get there!!! I was amazed about the size of Machu Picchu! It is so much bigger than I imagined it! Again no picture can show the sheer size of it! Also the scenery around Machu Picchu was spectacular!!! I will remember this trip for the rest of my life, thank you Active for giving me an my family the opportunity to experience Peru and Machu Picchu!”

  • Non-stop adventure

“What a truly excellent adventure. Peru is an amazing place and having great tour guides and a tour group makes in even more enjoyable. The places visited and activities balance out adventure with culture with environment. Great balance between being on the go and having a chance to relax and take in as much of Peru as you can. The tour guides make this trip, always in control and ensure that everyone is having fun. The group I was on were a great bunch of people from all over, each was there to have a good time and enjoy the trip. Definitely be recommending the trip and looking at Active Adventures for my next holiday adventure.”

  • Inca Trail At Christmas

“The Active South America 'Jaguar' trip far exceeded our expectations. We knew ACTIVE would do a good job, and the experience and adventure of the Inca Trail was fantastic! Hard, but worth it.”
    – Minnesota, United States Jaguar, January 2014
  • “This is probably the best trip I have taken. Peru is amazing - the landscape and the people are unmatched. I'd travelled with Active before (to the Galapagos) and I enjoyed that trip. However, this trip truly has set the bar higher. Elder and Erik were amazing leaders. Consistently, they put forth effort to make sure everyone was happy and to meet individual needs.”

  • Todd and Kelli's Excellent Adventure

“This was our honeymoon trip and it was perfect! The organization and details of each day were well thought out and executed and it was a treat just to get up and enjoy each day. This was our first trip with an agency/group and we were pleased with how much we enjoyed it. What stood out to us about Active Adventures was their social responsibility, including the environment, supporting local businesses, and charity. Active was recommended to us and we would definitely recommend an Active trip to others.”
    – Nevada, United States Jaguar, January 2014
  • Great way to experience Peru!

“This was our second trip with Active, and once again, we found ourselves well cared for! Our guide, Elder, was great! He was fun, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. His love for his country was so evident and he shared it with all of us.”

  • Great Trip!

“I can't believe how much we got to see and do in just two weeks! It was so nice to travel as part of a small group - there was always somebody walking your speed on the hike or sharing your interests. It was also great to see so much without having to plan the little things that can become big things in a hurry: where to eat, where to stay, how to get from A to B. Definitely looking forward to the next trip!”

  • Amazing Patagonia - So glad we had Active to guide us!

“We had such an incredible time on our Condor trip. It lived up to its name too, we saw plenty of condors! Sebastian was a fantastic guide - he really cared about making our trip as worry-free and enjoyable as possible. He has been leading this trip for five years and it shows - he knows so many little tricks that make all the difference in having streamlined logistics. He is also a fantastic story-teller and we learned so much about Chilean and Argentine culture (and humor!) from him. There were SO many occasions that we were glad to have Sebastian's knowledge, expertise, and resources to shepherd us! The trip itself was simply incredible. It's hard to decide what I enjoyed the most: from the grandeur of Torres del Paine Park and Monte Fitz Roy to the glacier walk, the kayaking and more. Then there was the delectable pisco sours, wine, fish, and steak to enjoy with Sebastian's tales. For me, it was worth every penny for the trip of a lifetime!”

  • A Condor in El Dorado

“Thank you to all at Active Adventures for making my Condor trip a truly amazing experience. The hikes took us through some of the best scenery in the world. The beauty is hard to describe but the overwhelming splendour of the rock formations, the surprisingly varied colours of the lakes and glaciers and the wind-defying flowers enriches the soul and humbles the mind - an uplifting spiritual experience. We walked, kayaked and cycled through El Dorado and came back with golden pixels and shiny memories that will rejuvenate the weariest of souls for a very long time. My only concern on this trip was deciding where to point my camera next! We saw some amazing sights but kayaking amongst the icebergs of Grey Lake was uplifting and out of this world. A good balance of varied activities was undertaken and at no point did we spend too much time travelling on buses. The group was guided by an amazing leader (Sebastian) who went out of his way to ensure that all our needs were met, tolerated no gremlins and went out of his way to facilitate making special requirements a reality. Thank you Sebastian for always being friendly and waiting patiently for me to finish taking yet another photograph. When we did have an unfortunate injury to one of the hikers (broken leg), true professionalism was shown in the way in which the injured person was taken care of, never left alone with strangers and was evacuated from rough terrain in a remote region to receive the required medical attention in a city hospital. A well organized and fantastic trip.”

  • Enchanting Peru

“My Jaguar trip with Active Adventures was a truly unique experience and one that I will always remember fondly. The trip was active, but allowed for some rest days to reset between activities. The trek to Machu Picchu was incredible and we were fortunate to have little rain even though it was the beginning of the rainy season. I enjoyed the interactions with the local people and being immersed in the culture with the stay with the local family on Lake Titicaca. I highly recommend this adventure to anyone who wants to experience the beauty and culture of Peru.”
    – Colorado, United States Jaguar, December 2013

  • “The trip was very well organised and executed. I thought Sebastian did a marvelous and skilled job. There were a few things that didn't go as planned/desired and he handled these situations very well. He's also very proud of Chile and to be Chilean. It showed and added to the experience that he wanted us to have admiring the best of Chile.”
    – Washington, United States Condor, December 2013
  • Condor - November 2013

“All the guides - in every activity - had to be among the, if not the, very best. We never floundered as a group. As on every occasion, complicated or unforeseen, Sebastian or the guide or guides in charge cleverly and thoughtfully worked through to a solution. This was a heart stopping, heart quickening, heart filling adventure.”

  • Condor Nov 2013

“My Patagonia experience was top notch! I had my mind set on Patagonia since 2012 and when I began researching I didn't understand why I couldn't find more competitive pricing packages and a wider array of tour companies. Now I understand why! Exploring Patagonia is an art that no oversell convenience packaging like Living Social or Groupon can mimic. Active got it right. For starters, the Pack List to FAQs was spot on! (I couldn't believe that I used every single item that I packed). The W-trek was amazing – challenging and rewarding! The selection of cities and quaint hotels was a far cry from typical international tourist traps. Sebastian and the guides we had for segments of the trip were professional and knowledgeable - it was obvious that they each thoroughly enjoyed educating teams of folks about the history and topography that make Patagonia the 8th wonder of the world.”
    – DC, United States Condor, December 2013
  • Awesome

“Awesome is the only word that comes near describing the delights experienced on our Condor experience. Over the years we have wandered this fabulous world and seen unbelievable sights, met unforgettable people and am still amazed what is out there to be discovered. For us Fitzroy was the crowning glory. The sight of this mountain will stay with me forever. I have given up trying to explain to others the joy this mountain can bring and try and convince them to put on a pair of boots and start walking.”

  • Tortuga Trip Review

“I was so very happy to have chosen Active Adventures land-based Galapagos trip. Not only did we experience all the incredible wildlife and fantastic natural history, but we also got a close-up sense of island living by staying each night in small towns. The wide variety of activities kept us going all day long. I am not sure how the trip could have been any better.”

  • An amazing adventure in Peru!

“My now wife Sarah and I decided a few years ago that we wanted to have a small, intimate destination wedding at Machu Picchu. We've been travel junkies for just under a decade and have been to a number of European countries as well as a few trips to other states here in the USA. Born and raised in central New York State, we're city folk that look forward to occasionally getting out into the world to appreciate the variety of amazing natural wonders, history, cultures, languages and people that share this enormous planet with us. In the past, we've always mapped out and navigated our own vacation adventures. This was our first ever guided trip... and Active Adventures set a new bar of expectation for how we'll look into our vacations going forward, in fact we were so impressed that our next vacation will almost certainly be one of the other guided adventures that Active offers. Peru is like no place in the world we've ever been before. The constant but ever-changing backdrop of the Andes coupled with the timeless landscaping and stonework of the Incas and pre-Incas immediately removes you from your day-to-day life and transports you to another time. There aren't adequate words to describe the sensation of wonder that the scenery's something that has to be experienced in order to understand. Our guide Yohn was immediately likeable and was, in my opinion, a master of his trade. Not only did he provide us with facts about where we were, he also elaborated on a lot of the myths, legends and musings in order to give us a better sense of the mystery that abounds in the mountains the Incas and their predecessors once called home. But he was always careful to separate fact from fable so we could come away from our trip with both proven knowledge and a heightened sense of wonder about this world and its history. Furthermore, he talked about his own life and experiences growing up in Peru which even further rounded out our immersion. By the end of the trip, we had an experience of Peru that was deeper, more intimate, and more memorable that anything we could have arranged on our own. I could literally write a book-long review of how awesome this trip was and there wouldn't be a single sentence of negativity. Active handled the arrangements of our wedding, and we were provided a ceremony conducted by two Shamans (father and son) and catered to by wonderful staff on the mountainside of the Pisac Ruins (we were unable to book a ceremony at Machu Picchu due to recently enacted Peruvian regulations. But I'm glad it worked out the way it did! It was amazing!). Like I said, I could go on and on and on... There are so many things I haven't even mentioned like the unforgettable few days in the Amazon Rainforest, the 4-day hike up the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, the plethora of ruins we encountered, the man-made floating islands on Lake Titicaca, and SO MUCH MORE. And the people of Peru were AWESOME. We never for a moment felt unsafe, in fact we felt welcome by everyone. I'll end by saying this... Our primary point of interest in deciding on this trip to Peru was, of course, Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is every bit as amazing as you can imagine and more, BUT... I say with full conviction that nearly every day we spent in Peru was filled with sights and wonders we didn't expect. In hindsight, Machu Picchu was just one small part of the overall experience, and there are a great many places on this trip that rivaled it in its ability to just leave you speechless in their presence. If you are considering this trip... Stop considering and start planning. It will enrich your life immensely. Also, be prepared to sweat... They're not called ACTIVE Adventures for nothing :-)”

  • Peru 2013

“The Jaguar trip was one of my favorite trips ever and my wife and I do a lot of traveling. My favorite portion of the trip was the Lares Trail hike where we were able to get away from the tourist areas and see people living in the mountains the way that they have lived for centuries. I may need to go back and do the classic Inca Trail for comparison. I feel as though we had a good overview of Peru and it's Inca heritage. Cynthia was the best guide I have had on a tour such as this and we gave her some challenges!”

  • Awesome

“This trip exceeded our expectations! Michael and I were looking to get to married in Peru and the Active team put together a beautiful wedding ceremony for us that we will remember for a lifetime. I have waited to visit Peru for a long time and loved the itinerary for this tour. We had a lot of great experiences around the country and it was beautiful. Our tour guide Yohn was fantastic; it was like traveling with a friend who took care of all the details. On the Inca Trail we had a great guide in Frank and the best porters on the trail. I cannot wait to take another trip with Active Adventures!”

  • Tortuga Trip comments

“Good trip and good guide (Pepo). We had only 4 people (including us) on the trip so it was very personal and excellent interactions with Pepo. He did a great job getting a substitute guide for our time on Santa Cruz (he had badly hurt his ankle the day before on Isabela). The trip was a bit less active than we had expected....more free 'explore on your own' time we used for some additional hiking....but we felt perhaps a guide on these would have been helpful.”

  • Jaguar trip comments

“Trip was, wonderful and very varied locations...saw many beautiful sights and a rich variety of environments/nature/wildlife. Inca Trail hike was difficult (altitude) but well worth the effort. Excellent guide (Frank) and support team. Amazon headwater trip was exceptional. Wonderful location (Amazonia Ecolodge) and good jungle hikes. The anaconda we saw was an unexpected highlight.”

  • Climbing the Mountain

“When we booked this adventure, we were unsure of the difficulty between the two options to choose - classic Inca Trail or the Lares. Being in our 70's we have always held our own in all kinds of adventures. But this time the altitude got Gloria. She was all right with the muscle required, but could not keep up from labored breathing and often rest. Soon we could not meet the time schedule for each night's camp site. Alas! we must turn back. Indeed, we saw many people of all ages returning also. This short account is written to praise Active for the way in which they handled this disappointing turn of events. They turned a bad experience into a good one and arranged to get us on the Lares and ultimately to Machu Picchu. The trip was full of great adventure and we sincerely recommend Active for the trip.”
    – Texas, United States Jaguar, November 2013
  • Land based trip is the best

“So glad we chose Active and a land based trip to the Galapagos. I think we got to see more and experience the islands more than you could from a boat.”
    – North Carolina, United States Tortuga, November 2013
  • From Volcanos to the Amazon Jungle

“This trip was quite good and Jhayro was great! The highlight for me was the hike up the river climbing up the waterfalls. The active piece definitely pushes you, but not beyond what you are capable of. Would have enjoyed slightly less driving around, but overall a very good trip and I'm glad we tacked it on to the Galapagos (Tortuga) trip.”
    – California, United States Tapir, November 2013
  • Pablo Rocks!!

“Wow, trip of a lifetime. I would move to Isabella and live there for awhile. Pablo absolutely made this trip. He is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about his islands and all that is on them (including the people on his island). We saw turtles and penguins and sea lions and flamingos and iguanas everywhere, everyday. Swimming with the turtles and penguins and sea lions is amazing (if somewhat shocking at first!). Beautiful to see and be a part of.”
    – California, United States Tortuga, November 2013
  • Beautiful mountains

“This was a wonderful adventure along the Inca Trail and more. The only downside is that the route is well-traveled. This is more about seeing classic sites than a wilderness adventure.”
    – Maryland, United States Jaguar, November 2013
  • Peru Lares Trail October 2013

“Our family group of seven, aged 31 to 61, had a wonderful time with aggressive hikes for 5 days including a 9 hour hike to just short of 16,000 feet, nice bike ride, day unscheduled and 3 days in the jungle. Unscheduled day was white water rafting 2 hours outside of Cuzco which I recommend adding to all trips. Our primary guide, Cynthia, was terrific and very helpful keeping us all challenged, entertained, well fed and full of smiles.”
    – Wisconsin, United States Jaguar, November 2013
  • Bucket list experience

“The Galapagos trip was perfect. Would not change anything. Pablo was amazing as was the itinerary.”
    – California, United States Tortuga, November 2013
  • JUST GO!

“It was tremendous! I feel so lucky and privileged to have visited this fabulous place. Pablo our guide was so passionate about the history ecology and preservation of this beautiful part of the world. We saw every animal there was to see and super close up! Snorkeling with sea lions, turtles and penguins was definitely a highlight! So fun.”
    – Massachusetts, United States Tortuga, November 2013
  • Travels with friends, old and new

“We traveled with another couple that we met on an adventure in southeast Asia. This proved to be equally exciting and a good way to make new friends. A highlight was homemade Martinis in our tent after a long day of hiking.”
    – Washington, United States Jaguar, November 2013
  • Trip of a lifetime is an understatement

“Even though the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in itself is an experience, I will never forget that without Active Adventures it wouldn't have been quite the same. We had the most knowledgeable guides and we were all treated like one big family. Cynthia was fantastic; it was if we had known her all our lives. Because of Cynthia I would consider doing another trip to South America with Active Adventures.”
    – Colorado, United States Jaguar, November 2013
  • Jaguar 2013

“This trip was phenomenal. The activities were great. The main guide was wonderful, easy to work with, and extremely helpful. The individual activity guides were also very friendly and knowledgeable. Every trip detail was very well thought out. For example, on our travel day from Cuzco to Puno, they brought bicycles along so we could bike some of the track instead of sitting in the van for six hours. The trip was perfectly balanced between activities and free/relaxation time. We also learned a lot about Peruvian culture and history, much more than we expected. All in all, an incredible trip.”
    – Washington, United States Jaguar, October 2013
  • Great trip!

“Peru was an amazing country and seeing it on the Jaguar trip was great! Cynthia our guide, was awesome. She was informative, easy to get along with, and definitely had a passion for what she does. The activities we did were fun, all the food we ate was delicious, and I can't speak highly enough about the trip! We also happened to have a really fun, and easy going group, which added to the experience.”
    – California, United States Jaguar, October 2013
  • Unlike anything I've ever done!

“The Jaguar trip was the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure. I originally planned this trip around checking Machu Picchu off my bucket list but throughout the course of the trip, I did things I never knew I always wanted to. From hiking the Lares Trail to staying with a family on Amantani Island, I experienced more than I ever thought I would. This was unlike any vacation I have ever taken and something I will never forget. I can't wait to go on my next Active Adventure.”
    – California, United States Jaguar, October 2013
  • Wonderful experience

“The trip was wonderful. Pablo is an excellent guide and his passion for his work and his home certainly shines through. I truly believe that having him as our guide made our Galapagos experience that much more special. We were fortunate enough to have a captain and a skipper that were very skilled - we even were so lucky to spot a humpback whale and dolphins when traveling in between islands. So happy to have gone on this trip to such an extraordinary place!”
    – New York, United States Tortuga, September 2013
  • What a challenge!

“This trip was extremely challenging! I had never done anything like it before, and it really pushed me to the limit ... in a good way! Peru is incredibly beautiful and has so much to offer. What made out trip amazing was our incredible guide, Elder. The people we met were incredible. Definitely the trip of a lifetime!”
    – Connecticut, United States Jaguar, September 2013
  • The Only Way to See the Andes

“Incredible experience. We had a great group of mixed ages and experiences to travel with. The ability to be active on a trip like this meant I went home feeling in better shape than when I started. Best kind of vacation!”
    – Minnesota, United States Jaguar, September 2013
  • Pregnant and Happy!

“This trip was wonderful. I am so glad I was able to take this trip with my Mom. We got to spend some quality time together in a wonderful place observing wildlife that we could not find anywhere else in the world. I was a little concerned before getting to Ecuador because I was five months pregnant and wasn't sure I would be able to participate in all the activities. But our guide Pablo was amazing and, while I generally stayed in the back of the pack, his enthusiasm for the Galapagos and nature in general kept me motivated. I didn't want to miss anything he had to say or show us. Outstanding!”
    – Colorado, United States Tortuga, September 2013
  • Fantastic Adventure!

“This trip has so many highlights - the people, the trek, the home stay, the kayaking, the food ... couldn't have asked for more!”
    – Midlothian, United Kingdom Jaguar, September 2013
  • Peru!

“Peru is a beautiful country! My view of Peru expanded as a result of going on the tour. Before the trip Peru was Machu Picchu ... but now when I think about the country I remember impressive mountains and colourful culture and music and jungle and history and friendships! I had a fantastic trip!”
    – Ontario, Canada Jaguar, September 2013
  • Peru my way!

“My trip to Peru was simply fantastic. I was feeling all kinds of anxiety prior to the trip as I was doing this alone and leaving my family behind, but the minute my adventure started all that worry was for nothing. The trip was organized and reassuring. It would have been an absolute shame to have missed it due to fear. The experience was superb, intense enough, great sites, good food and fun trip mates. The vista was incredible and I get to keep the memories forever. Great trip, my advice to anyone is to leap in and do it.”
    – Ontario, Canada Jaguar, September 2013
  • Jam-packed with a variety of activities and sights

“We sandwiched this trip in between Galapagos and Peru just to fill the gap but it turned out to be one of our favorites. Jhayro is an excellent guide and made sure we experienced much of what Ecuador has to offer. The geographic and bio-diversity of Ecuador was amazing - snow covered volcanos to Amazon rivers, roaming llamas to tarantulas jumping from their holes. This trip was also one of the most active - biking, hiking, horseback riding, white water rafting, zip-lining, reverse-canyoning, water-hole jumping, local village exploring, river boating etc. WOW, all in 6 days!”
    – New York, United States Tapir, September 2013
  • Amazing experience!

“The trip provided us with an intimate view of the breathtaking Peruvian landscape and warm people. We loved our hikes although the altitude was challenging at times. Cynthia was a fabulous guide who helped our group to bond in a very special way. Our favorite part was the Amazon where we hope to return.”
    – New Jersey, United States Jaguar, September 2013
  • Thank you!

“Amazing trip ... fantastic job of coordinating all travel arrangements and everything ran so smoothly. I absolutely cannot say enough about our guides Yohn, Frank and Eric. They made the trip ... so knowledgeable, calm, and helpful.”
    – Pennsylvania, United States Jaguar, August 2013
  • Tapir trip

“It was an amazing trip with our guide Jhayro and the eight members of our group. I liked the fact that most of the decision making was done by Active Adventures and they seemed to know exactly what we wanted to do. It was nice to have someone else take care of all the details including lodging, meals and transportation. All we had to worry about was to enjoy the beautiful scenery, the adventure, and the comradery of our group. Our guide was all that we could ask for and more. He clearly had us and our enjoyment in his best interest. I loved the fact that this flatlander from Kansas could spend time and bond with interesting people from Russia, England, Singapore, Venezuela and Colorado. The conversation around the dinner table each evening was incredible. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone!”
    – Kansas, United States Tapir, August 2013
  • Trip of a lifetime

“I've just returned from a Jaguar tour in Peru; it was a trip I will never forget!! The whole trip was well organised and worth every penny. I found myself with a fantastic mix of people and a brilliant tour guide. The activities took us away from the tourist trail and allowed you to experience the 'real' Peru from a completely different perspective ... whether that was from a bike, kayak or from a mountain pass at 4800m altitude!”
    – Somerset, United Kingdom Jaguar, August 2013
  • Very impressed!

“Really enjoyed the trip and loved Cynthia! She's amazing and everything was very organized and well run. Already recommending it to friends!”
    – Colorado, United States Jaguar, August 2013
  • One heck of a trip this was!!

“Having been lucky enough to have had the chance to travel around the world a fair bit, I would rate my Jaguar trip with Active as probably the best trip ever. Even as I write this, I can't help but go down the memory lane and think of those two incredible weeks spent in Peru. Serenity, thrill, adrenalin rush, joy and sheer beauty - mix these with some lemon, salt, spice, chopped onions and salmon, and voila - you get a 'ceviche' of a trip! Loved it to bits and can't wait for another one with Active!”
    – Dubai, United Arab Emirates Jaguar, August 2013

“Pepo was a wonderful trip leader. Sam, the intern that joined us, was particularly supportive during my first snorkeling experience. I appreciated the individualized encouragement! Loved the varied activities!”
    – New York, United States Tortuga, August 2013
  • If you're physically able to make the trip, don't think twice!

“This trip was everything I could have asked for and more. I couldn't have asked for a better leader - Cynthia definitely made the trip what it was. She knew so much, was so helpful, and extremely fun and friendly. The Jaguar trip was incredibly well planned and excellently structured. It is clear that Active has done its research and knows what is best for its clients. I was certainly encouraged to take another trip with Active, and didn't want Jaguar to end - the people, the program, the experiences and the memories are all unforgettable!”
    – New York, United States Jaguar, August 2013
  • Wonderful Trip!

“What an amazing trip!! Our guide was incredible and everyone in our group was fun and easy to get along with. I feel as though I got to see the 'real' Peru while having a great adventure. The food was SO DELICIOUS!!! The people were friendly and I loved the hikes, bike rides and kayaking. My favorite thing had to be the Lares Trail, but eating the scrumptious Peruvian food was right up there as well.”
    – Pennsylvania, United States Jaguar, August 2013
  • Great experience!

“Tapir was a great way to explore Ecuador, from the Cotopaxi Volcano to the Amazon Jungle. The highlight of the trip was being able to taste home-cooked Ecuadorian cuisine made by the wife of our guide - Jhayro.”

  • Another fine Active trip

“Wonderful trip with Active. Hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu was an experience of a lifetime. The Amazon was also great. My favorite part of the trip was Lake Titicaca. Our guide, Cynthia, was really good. The local guides used along the way were also great.”
    – Minnesota, United States Jaguar, July 2013
  • Jam packed full of awesomeness!

“This was my second trip with Active, and it was just as amazing as the first. Every day was full of new and exciting places, food and visual stimulus. Can't express anything better...other than it was epic.”

  • Couldn't stump our guides!

“As hard as we tried to by asking obscure, random questions, we were unable to stump Jhayro and Jessica. They were by far the most knowledgeable guides I've ever had on a trip!”
    – Oregon, United States Tapir, July 2013
  • Fabulous experience in Peru

“We had a wonderful Jaguar trip to Peru. The group of travelers in our group connected immediately and bonded as we continued our trip. Yohn was a knowledgeable guide. He had some arrival on time issues on a few occasions. Other than that the food was absolutely wonderful, especially on the Lares Trail hike. Freddy, the chef, was outstanding. The presentation at each course of each meal was as if he was preparing the food in a chef's kitchen. Absolutely wonderful. The porters on the hike were excellent also. We really enjoyed Wilhelm, the additional guide. Thank you to Elder who had to take over when Yohn became ill and could not accompany us to the Amazon. All the restaurants were excellent. So generous to be allowed to order anything on the menu. The Jungle lodge was delightful. We several saw four species of monkeys and fabulous birds. Inez was wonderful as our rainforest guide.”
    – Florida, United States Jaguar, July 2013
  • Land of contrasts

“I don't think I was ready for the huge contrasts this country had to offer, from towering mountains terraced by Incas to parched deserts and tropical rainforests, all relatively close together and bundled up in a country hugely affected by past political turmoil, from ancient times to modern times, this country has had to deal with extremes of weather, topography and politics. I saw it on the faces of people that lived in the deserts, that danced in the towns, that sought to protect their fragile assets, an amazing country.”
    – Canterbury, New Zealand Jaguar, July 2013
  • Incredible!

“Active South America got lucky when they found Jessica, the tour guide for our trip. Her passion for her home-land was evident every day. She shared her vast knowledge of the plant and animal species on a daily basis and made sure that we had "delicious" meals followed by "relaxing" activities. The animals, the food, the people, the activities and the group made it a trip to remember. I cannot recommend Active enough. Things were organized very well, there was not much down time and while the activities were never challenging, they were certainly fun. I would definitely go with Active on another adventure!”
    – Colorado, United States Tortuga, July 2013
  • Surprises Around Every Corner!

“I was always amazed at how Active was so organized - from transportation to replacement of a sick guide! We had a rope get stuck in the prop of the boat and the driver got in that cold water and cut it out and had us back on track within 45 minutes! Once our guide told us transportation was waiting around the corner and to our surprise it was a "toot toot" one of those litte bicycle carts with a driver - we had a blast racing to the port! Things just happen - people got sick and our guide always managed to know how to take care of it. For me personally, I got altitude sickness and my guide got a horse to help me over the pass! I made it and would do it again in a heartbeat! So pick me!!!”
    – Georgia, United States Jaguar, June 2013

    – Alberta, Canada Tapir, June 2013
  • Overall trip impression.

“I really enjoyed our adventure and visit to Ecuador. Jhayro, our guide, was always helpful, considerate and concerned. We had a bad experience with our airline and messed up flights resulting in not having any luggage when we arrived. Jhayro worked tirelessly and with much effort to obtain our luggage for us. After three days he was able to obtain our luggage by sending someone to pick it up for us. When reading the itinerary for our trip I didn't realize how extreme some of the activities would be. As a matter of fact, on the bicycle ride down from the Cotopaxi volcano I didn't realize the conditions would be so cold and damp at such a high altitude. I was really enjoying the ride when I had an accident and fell when we encountered some loose sand. The fall caused the brake lever to puncture my clothing and also my skin. The first aid I received on the bus was very good. Jhayro stayed in contact with a doctor and when we arrived in Banos I received medical attention and I am doing fine. As a result of my accident I was not able to participate in some of the other activities, but I still enjoyed my time in Ecuador.”
    – Louisiana, United States Tapir, June 2013
  • Awesome adventure!

“The trip definitely exceeded my expectations, it was truly an amazing experience. I was looking for a challenge, and I definitely got it. I can't say enough good things about our guide, Elder. I had some problems with altitude sickness, and he really looked after me, especially on the Lares trail. Even though he routinely runs this tour, he manages to maintain a high level of enthusiasm, and answered all of our questions thoroughly and with interest. I couldn't think of a person better suited for this job. I also really appreciated the way that Active ensured that a good mix of people were in the group, couples and singles. Just a few suggestions to make the trip even more spectacular. It would have been cool to spend a night on one of the reed island. The other suggestion would be to stay the night in a slightly nicer hotel in Puno, I wouldn't have minded paying a bit extra. After hiking the Lares trail, it would have been nice to have a shower with hot water! Had to have a cold one instead, wasn't too happy about that. But those things were pretty minor, and all in all, I had a fantastic time!”
    – British Columbia, Canada Jaguar, June 2013
  • Swimming with Sea Lions

“I can't believe how playful the sea lions are! They come up to you in the water and swim around you like puppy dogs! They made the trip incredible!”

    – London, United Kingdom Tapir, June 2013
  • Great time, unique honeymoon experience

“My husband and I had a wonderful time on the Jaguar trip to Peru. It made for a fun and unique honeymoon experience that we will remember forever. Elder, our guide, was fantastic, extremely helpful and knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about sharing his home country with everyone. In addition to a memorable trip to Peru, we made lasting friendships with everyone on our excursion and hope to reunite on another Active Adventure some day!”
    – Texas, United States Jaguar, June 2013
  • Thank you Active South America for a life changing trip.

“The experience I had in Peru was completely unexpected. I knew that I would have a good time, but I believe I have come back as a different person. For me, it was a unique personal and emotional experience. The people within my group will be friends for a lifetime. The beauty of Peru-the landscape, the people-are indescribable. As far as operation of the company during the trip, I found to be exceptional. Any issue or problem, if one occurred was taken care of promptly. Elder (trip leader) cared well for all of us. Truly a genuine individual. Thank you Active South America for a life changing trip.”

    – California, United States Jaguar, June 2013
  • Don't know where to begin!

“Of course the beautiful and varied landscape was so amazing. Add to that all the wildlife and you have a trip even better than we imagined. But what made the trip worth five stars was the experience with our guide and all who worked with him to make it all so easy and unforgettable for us. I think Pepo made the members of our group really care about the Galapagos, showing us what a special place it is and how important it is to preserve the islands. He answered every single one of our questions without even hesitating. Very impressive. On top of that he is just a "super" nice guy. We had so much fun doing all the activities especially swimming with sea lions and turtles and iguanas. Even the volcano hike was a good time. Congratulations, Active SA. You put together a great tour and we are happy to recommend it to friends and family.”

  • I will be doing another Active trip in the future.

“I completed a trip just before my Active trip with G adventures, it didn't even close to stack up. The hotel Rumi Punku was amazing. So many great things that we saw and did. Plus our guide Elder was beyond amazing so knowledgeable and fun. I will be doing another Active trip in the future.”
    – Ontario, Canada Jaguar, June 2013
  • Phenomenal

“Where do I begin??? I have nothing but glowing comments regarding our Peru trek. Running a close second to the stunning mountainous vistas of Peru was the level of professionalism of your staff and the quality of your tour company. What did I like the best other than our phenomenal guide Elder? How about the supporting cast? I can't say enough great things about them? A special thanks to Mayra, Clemente, Freddie and all of the others. You'd be hard pressed to find a more professional and helpful crew who seemed to never tire. It doesn't stop there either. Our hotels in Cusco and Puerto Maldonado were top notch! We loved it! Our hotel in Lima... not so much. The compassion and stewardship that your guides showed to the local people and the environment on the Lares Trail by offering bread, cocoa leaves and small gifts along the trek was very touching and I'm so happy they shared this with us prior to starting the hike so we could participate as well. I would never call this a "once in a lifetime time trip" because my wife and I look forward to our next Active South America adventure.”
    – Pennsylvania, United States Jaguar, June 2013
  • Galapagos Photography Adventure Tour with Pablo, Karla and Ivan

“Galapagos, WOW! This, our third adventure with Active South America was unique and exciting, and this third one tops them all! Spectacular! Daily packed full of the activities and actions we love, including photography. The coaching by two world class photographers was 'special'. Our local Galapageno guide Pablo was the best! Our local Galapagos support group "GalaLKiwi" and their staff were efficient, thorough and caring. Ivan Kashinsky and Karla Gachet, our two Nat Geo published photographic coaches, were informative, personable, and fun to be with. And the best of all... The Galapagos! Words cannot describe this pelagic remote and 'other worldly' place and its marine and terrestrial wildlife. You had to be there! Our six fellow travelers were wonderful companions, all of them were into nature, people and photography. I would recommend this adventure in a heartbeat! This adventure of packed full days leaves one exhausted at the end of each day, and up for what's coming the next. Me? I'm a life-long sailor who never gets seasick, and so... a little advice for those who are subject to seasickness, this adventure involves a lot of time on the ocean... bring those tablets!”

“We were expecting adventure and lots of hiking, and we found not only that, but a group of people who became our friends and partners in this wonderful vacation. I was able to disconnect completely from my day to day problems and enjoyed a time that I will always remember and carry deep in my heart. Thank you so much Active South America, I will surely return for another trip.”

  • Hang on, I'm booking the Monkey

“The food, the people, the activities, the guide the friends and yes, the monkeys were all parts that made up whole awesomeness of the Tapir trip. Locals welcomed us into their homes and submerged us in their wonderful culture. The activities were fun and plentiful; the memories and friendships were made for a lifetime.”

  • Beautiful Peru

“We enjoyed our trip thoroughly although were definitely some tough physical challenges. We could not have imagined the beauty of our surroundings - it was surreal at times. The tour group was like family as were our guides throughout. Really enjoyed PaPa Yohn who took excellent care of us. Lots and lots of laughs and ooohs and aaaahs. Would highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants a good aerobic vacation.”

“Travelled with a fantastic group of people to the most amazing parts of Peru. Active did a great job organising and showcasing a diverse range of sites in this beautiful country - would definitely highly recommend this trip!”

  • Amazing!

“What an amazing trip! Our Jaguar adventure was very well organized - we were well taken care of every step of the way. I'm recommending it to all my friends as something they simply must do. Yohn did a wonderful job and our group was so much fun! We are looking forward to planning another Active Adventure.”

  • Galapagos Trip

“Pepo was awesome. There was never any downtime or waiting for the next trip. This was due to Pepo having transport organised and waiting for us at each point. I never felt that there was any pressure on the environment, in fact sometimes it seemed that we were the only people there. The trip was not too intrepid in that an older person could manage all the activities. Even the volcano walk! The accomodation was perfect. The only suggestion I could make is to meet in Guayaquil instead of Quito. We didn't get the chance to look around Quito and because of flights arrived there after midnight and had to leave at 7 am partly because of the location of the new airport.”
    – Otago , New Zealand Tortuga, May 2013

“Tons of fun! Jhayro was awesome and so was the group. LOVED it!”
    – Alberta, Canada Tapir, May 2013
  • Trip of a Lifetime!!!

“This was definitely a trip of a lifetime for me. Getting to snorkel with sea lions, giant tortoises, seeing the beautiful nature. It was the best!”
    – Alberta, Canada Tortuga, May 2013
  • Witnessing Earth's creation

“The best part was experiencing the creation of the Earth through volcanic activity as well as endemic species evolution. Variety of landscapes and seascapes was awesome. I felt very well taken care of and returned with new knowledge and stories to tell!”
    – California, United States Tortuga, May 2013
  • Fantastic Honeymoon

“My husband and I had a fantastic honeymoon on the Tortuga trip! It was eveything and more we could have dreamed of! What better way to celebrate our marrage than with sea turtles, blue footed boobies, an amazing travel group and a well-educated tour guide.”
    – Alberta, Canada Tortuga, May 2013
  • An unforgettable adventure

“There are no words to describe the beauty of the Galapagos, or how amazing our trip crew was. Pepo, our guide, was born to do this job. He was smart, patient, attentive, funny, and truly got to know each group member. The other members of our Active team were equally kind and fun. I could not recommend this trip more!”

  • Visit the Galapagos for a unique adventure

“Our trip to the Galapagos was full of adventure and wondrous sights. Our guide, Pepo, was knowledgeable, funny and engaged with us the whole time. He ensured everyone in the group could enjoy the activities, regardless of ability. The diversity of wildlife, scenery, activities and the skill of our guide made this a truly marvelous experience. The multiple snorkeling trips were the highlight of the holiday for me, but all of the activities were great.”

  • Terrific trip, teeming with wildlife!

“I loved the fact that we were able to stay on the islands (as opposed to being on a boat). Every island was so different! We saw so much different wildlife: sea lions, sea and land turtles, dolphins, whales, penguins, starfish, all kinds of fish, 3 kinds of sting rays, amazing birds - you name it, we saw it. Jessica was a very knowledgeable guide! I personally could have done with a little less free time...”
    – Massachusetts, United States Tortuga, April 2013
  • Awesome Ecuador

“We really enjoyed the trip, the activites were excellent. The Hacienda was supurb and Gabriel was an excellent host (we even had a wood burning stove in our room, which was lit for our return from horseriding in the Cotapaxi foot hills and the jacuzzi hot tub was a fantastic suprise). Orio the dog was mental. Cycling, rafting and canyoning were great fun. The rest of the accommodation was very good, especially the Termas Papallacta, and the scenery walking in the Andean hills was breathtaking. We had a fantastic, if not a bit knackering, holiday (and we still had the Galapagas Islands to come)!”
    – Norfolk, United Kingdom Tapir, April 2013
  • Amazing Galapagos

“We loved it, the weather was fantastic really hot (would recommend at least factor 50+), the wildlife was amazing we saw everything, even penguins! Thank you Active and thank you Pablo whose passion for nature was unsurpassed.”

  • Trip I had dreamed of since childhood

“My Jaguar trip to Peru with Active South America was a trip I had dreamed of since childhood. From my early years when my mother would drop me off at the library while she ran errands, I was always drawn to the books that contained information on this mysterious world that was Peru!! Of course Machu Picchu was always the biggest mystery of all, the jungle, the people, the wildlife, and the Andes mountains were just mesmerizing to me. A place with our meager means that I would most likely never see. But at 48 years of age, here I was experiencing the amazing, the unbelievable. Every step of the trip was just a new wonder. Even before I reached Machu Picchu, I was in awww of the experience. This trip is the trip that will never be forgotten, it just isn't possible to get those memories out of my mind, there really is no way to separate myself from the experience and those whom I shared it with!!”
    – Arkansas, United States Jaguar, April 2013
  • I had a brilliant time with a lovely group of like-minded people

“Tapir is a great mix of activities and covers one of the main Ecuadorian tourist routes. I had a brilliant time with a lovely group of like-minded people - and it has whetted my appetite for more exploration of the Ecuadorian mainland. The locals we met were friendly and I liked that it covered both the highlands and the Amazon.”
    – West Yorkshire, United Kingdom Tapir, April 2013
  • Absolutely magical.

“The Galapagos are everything you'd hope them to be - absolutely magical. I was stunned by the variety of wildflife I saw and was especially thrilled to get up close and personal to both sea lions and turtles whilst snorkelling. And seeing giant tortoises in the wild was a privilege.”

  • Loved the land-based delivery of this trip vs a cruise

“Well organized and full days. Maybe too packed... 10 min transition times between activities. Loved all 4 islands and Quito is a great city. Hotel choices wonderful.”

  • Fantabulously Sceneragous Journey

“This was a journey for the senses. The scenery is straight out of a fantasy of the mind, something only the Spielberg crew could conjure up; the photos are proof!
The sense of euphoria was sealed each day with great company gathered around the dinner table for exceptional food and drink.
The hiking, as advertised, is world class. Plenty of terrain variety, but it was difficult keeping you eyes on the trail as the unfolding panoramas continuously vied for their attention.
Active just could not have chosen a better guide than Cynthia! She is so in tune to people and makes everyone feel special. Her picks for dining were superb. The books are wrong, there's plenty of variety in Patagonia.
What a nice treat to also have Lynett from Active join this trip. She is a pleasure to be around and was a big influence on the group keeping upbeat and laughing.
There simply are not enough superlatives to describe this trip.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You to Active Adventures. Keep up the fantastic job putting world-class adventures together and you are sure to keep Ali and myself hooked when considering "Where next"

    – Pennsylvania, United States Condor, March 2013
  • My Voyage of the Beagle

“The Galapagos Islands were something that was on my 'Dream Destinations' list. I always had the impression that these islands were uninhabited conservation sites for the wildlife. This trip was an eye-opener in that you not only got to witness all the wildlife, but you got to be exposed to the individuals who inhabit the islands. When people asked me what I enjoyed most it was honestly the individuals living on the island because they all seemed very happy and friendly.”
    – Virginia, United States Tortuga, March 2013
  • Still cuttin' it at 67.

“I was apprehensive since my wife is six years younger and a trail runner. I had given up the real vigorous exercise pretty much with some exceptions. So the trip, which was pretty vigorous, especially the first week, was quite an accomplishment for me and made the beer at the end of the day with my good friends in the group, was very satisfying. And I had been thinking of Patagonia for many years. I knew it would be sensational. And it was.”
    – Colorado, United States Condor, March 2013
  • This was our second amazing trip with Active Adventures.

“Patagonia. Most people have no idea where it is. But we do! Bill and I had a fantastic experience in this vast area with our knowledgeable and caring guide...Cynthia. But it felt like "two for one", as our group was joined by Lynette, a familiar name from Active-Adventures Client Services. We know that Cynthia was working hard (as everything flowed seamlessly) but it seemed that she was one of the group. Our entire group felt that it was our own unique, special vacation. This was our second amazing trip with Active Adventures. Meals were great, logistics smooth and the attention to detail was excellent. The views... unforgettable!”
    – Florida, United States Condor, March 2013
  • A reason to renew your passport - Patagonia

“Our Condor trip was an amazing adventure; rich in activity, great food and accommodations, heavenly scenery and the most fun new friends one could hope to meet. All of this guided by such kind, knowledgeable and caring guides. What are you waiting for? Book it. We are already looking at other trips to take with Active.”
    – Colorado, United States Condor, March 2013
  • Third trip with Active.

“The Tortuga trip with "Active" was much more then I expected. After talking to other people in the Galapagos from different tour companies, it was obvious I made the best choice!! I will never forget my amazing adventure in the Galapagos Islands!! Thank you Jessica and Active South America for a dream come true.”
    – Alberta, Canada Tortuga, March 2013
  • Soaring with the Condors...

“My Condor Patagonia trek was truly amazing ... one of those experiences that grows better with time. Our guide Cynthia made all of our transitions seamless so that all we had to do was to enjoy this awesome experience.”

  • Highly recommended!

“I just returned from my second trip with Active Adventures. The Condor was a thoroughly gratifying vacation experience. Cynthia was an amazing guide. She was knowledgable, flexible, and even gave great food suggestions ;) Cynthia worked very well with our local guides and took great care of all members of the group. THe accomodations were in great locations and the food was top notch! Overall, I would absolutely recommend this trip to Patagonia!”
    – California, United States Condor, March 2013
  • Most Excellent Adventure!

“Tortuga February 2013 was everything my wife Tricia had hoped that it would be! The animals, landscapes, and sealife are breathtaking! Our Guide Pablo was fantastic, sharing his comprehensive knowledge of the flora, fauna, and geology of the islands, a love for nature and his profession, and caring that our group had a most excellent adventure! Our tripmates were awesome: like-minded adventurers from around the world who shared both trip and life experiences to become great friends! And last but not least, the accomodations, food, and logistics exceeded our expectations. Thanks to all at ACTIVE S.A. for a once-in-a-lifetime experience!”

  • Tortugas, Iguanas Galore!

“I had a wonderful time on the Tortuga trip. Everything was very well organized - our days were full of wildlife spotting, biking, hiking, snorkeling, scuba. It was a very nicely mixed group - internationally, and age-wise (from mid-20's to 60's). I am an avid photographer and our guide was very accommodating of this, and I had LOTS of great photos to come home with. I absolutely would recommend this trip to anyone who wants to experience the Galapagos.”
    – Pennsylvania, United States Tortuga, March 2013
  • If you're thinking about a Galapagos trip - do it & do this one

“We did a great deal of research before picking this trip. We knew we wanted an active trip and knew we wanted to go to Galapagos. And that we wanted this to be a "once in a lifetime" adventure. Needless to say, we had high expectations. I'm happy to say that this trip met those expectations. Every day we were up an out early, doing and learning something new. We hiked, snorkeled, swam, kayaked, and biked, over four islands. We saw many animals; some of them very close up. (Sea lions will sometimes swim right up to you.) Out guide Pablo was excellent - extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic.
The entire trip was extremely well organized and a good mixture of activities with some down time. We had people from four continents on our trip and had lots to talk about. Would I recommend this trip? Yes! We're already planning our next Active trip.”
    – Illinois, United States Tortuga, March 2013
  • Thanks, Pepo, We're going to make it up to you.

“This was very nice. Low key and functional. I miss handling all the travel crap, but that's just me...otherwise we didn't feel like 'sheeple' ever and we did all these things we wanted to do and probably never would have got to, or it would've taken days to figure out. The Galapagos is so unusual and extensive and precious, that it would be a shame to take it on as an amateur. We were very grateful. I have been laying awake at night realizing how badly we stiffed our guide on the trip. It's shameful. How can I make it right?”

“Our adventure was non-stop activity, never a dull moment! Be prepared for anything, especially the weather changes! All good fun!!”
    – Puntarenas, Osa, Costa Rica Condor, March 2013
  • Trip of a Lifetime

“If you are looking for a trip that is both fun, enjoyable, and keeps you active, this is the trip for you. The scenery is something you will only believe when you see it. Every day was better than the previous one. The direction that we traveled, W trek first, then Argentina was the best. The weather was mild, a little cold and windy in the mornings, but after hiking for a few minutes you were ready to take off a layer or two.”
    – Texas, United States Condor, March 2013
  • Incredible

“The Tapir trip was by far the highlight of our 25 day venture throughout South America. The trip was perfectly planned and the adventure never stopped. Our guide was by far the best that we had as well (we had a few guides in Peru as well). He promised us in the beginning that if we were willing, we would rarely have any free time and he kept his promise. His knowledge of the environment and history of the area was extensive and he consistently ensured that each of us was enjoying our trip to the best that we could. The challenging activities, beautiful landscape, and beyond exceptional tour guide truly made this trip a once in a lifetime experience and further motivates me to not only visit Ecuador again, but use Active for other worldly adventures. Overall amazing, thank you.”
    – Hawaii, United States Tapir, March 2013
  • Our guides did a wonderful job of sharing Patagonia with us.

“I truly enjoyed touring with Active South America. Our guides did a wonderful job of sharing Patagonia with us. Everyone in our group was age 50+. We all were able to complete each hike and see the great sites Patagonia has to offer.”
    – Puntarenas, Osa, Costa Rica Condor, February 2013
  • Tortuga trip with Pepo - This was truly the trip of a lifetime.

“This was truly the trip of a lifetime. I couldn't believe how close you can get to the animals. The snorkeling was absolutely amazing. January was definitely a good month to go. It was breeding season for many of the animals, so many of them were flashing their bright colors and very active. I think there were more animals than people.

On another note, Pepo, our tour guide was the best. He was so knowledgeable about the history of each island and knew so much about all of the animals and fauna around us. He was very patient and professional. He truly was a great guide. I highly recommend him.

I would absolutely recommend this tour for anyone wanting to explore the islands.”
    – California, United States Tortuga, February 2013
  • Don't look anywhere else, just book with Active

“Unique Adventure. The Galapogas Islands are an absolute must for anyone travelling through South America. Each Island has a unique array of sights & animals, with the diving/snorkelling with turtles/sharks/rays etc our favourite part.
Active Tours run a very professional tour that includes everything from start to finish: don't look anywhere else, just book with Active & make sure you ask for Pepo as your guide as he is a legend”

  • A True Getaway!

“I was looking for a break - mind and body - from my everyday and Condor really delivered! Patagonia is out of this world (almost literally), the group was fantastic, the activities were challenging but not too overwhelming, and Cynthia as our guide was absolutely fantastic - a true people person who ensured success of the trip and group. I definitely recommend this trip!”
    – Maryland, United States Condor, February 2013
  • Condor Trip with Bill and Bob Jan./Feb.2013

“The trip was enjoyable primarily because Cynthia ensured that our needs were taken care of and was well organized. It was my FIRST and I may have been a little overwhelmed. i.e.loved the scenery but suffered a bit physically. i.e. my knees still aren't talking to me, which is fine. It was a learning experience.
My comment to improve the trip (which may not be possible) is somehow to rearrange the last two days (caves and penguins, which are somewhat filler, to get us back to Puntas Arenas such that those two days can incorporate some whale watching instead.
Again, I appreciated Cynthia's work and organization and would take another trip with her (if I can get my knees to agree :>)”

  • Awesome Active

“Traveling solo and never having done a tour before, I was pleasantly surprised by the easy, comfortable atmosphere of the group and the detailed planning on Active's part. • Condor - Patagonia - truly awesome in so many ways.

“This trip was truly awesome in so many ways. Each day was filled with continuous fun activity. The 4-day W-circuit through Torres del Paine hiking was fabulous and a great challenge. The ice hiking was quite different and really great - loved it and wished we could've done another day. Kayaking was also great surrounded by icebergs and glaciers - it was like being in a postcard! Thanks so much for a great time and experience.”

  • Better than I could have dreamed of

“What a phenomenal trip! I was wowed from beginning to end! Our guide, Arturo was fun, informative, organized and took care of EVERYTHING! Not ever having to worry about how to get from A to B was great in and of itself, but Arturo (and all the guides) made every day an adventure. And I don't think I've ever eaten so well in my life! I was expecting to eat sandwiches on the go along the Inca Trail, but to sit down and have 4 delicious courses every meal of the day was far beyond my expectations.

In the interest of being honest, I felt that the Amazon portion of the trip was a little less organized and action packed, but only by comparison to the rest of the trip. Being in the Amazon was still one of the highlights of the trip for me - so no harm done really :)

I was so impressed with Active that I am basing my next vacation off of where they can take me….I'm thinking I'll do Nepal next :)

Thanks you guys so much for the trip of a lifetime!”

“Spectacular scenery. I knew from my 2010 trip to the Galapagos that a trip with Active South America was going to be great, what suprised me was how gorgeous the countryside was along the Inca Trail. Our trail guide was fantastic, and New Years Eve at the jungle lodge was a once in a lifetime night.”

  • I DID IT!

“At 70 I was concerned that I had committed to more than I could do with Active South America's Condor trip. With the patient guidance of our wonderful guide, Cynthia, I made it through the W Trek with many wonderful pictures to boot. The weather gods smiled on us as we heard many times, "The top of that mountain is not usually visible, what views you have today we normally don't see." Spectacular country.”

“A wonderful trip, containing some of the best trekking in the world. The "W" trek is only one of the many highlights contained in this trip. The ice trekking is optional (maybe it should be included in the itinerary) but it is an activity not to be missed. The tour leader, Cynthia, is very attentive and runs the trip very smoothly. I would, without hesitation, recommend this trip!! Go ahead, book it.”

“Our guide was great. He did a wonderful job of informing us about Ecuador and about the areas we visited. His family provided a wonderful meal for us and great support as well. I regard Hirow as a great example of the young people in Ecuador who are mapping a bright future for themselves and for their country. It was great to have someone who participated side by side with us in all the activities and took so much joy in doing it!!”

  • Peru, not just Machu Picchu

“I decided to take this trip whilst travelling in the bus, reading the ASA brochure on the Kauri trip in New Zealand last New Year's. It didn't disappoint, well Machu Picchu did (too many people and my expectations were so high). Every other aspect of the trip was a delight, the places, the activities but most of all the people. Great way to spend a fortnight.”

  • Amazing adventure!

“It was so nice to basically show up and have every detail arranged by your company. Even though it was a really active trip, it felt very relaxing--I think, in part, because we didn't have to deal with any of the logistical details. Also, our tour guide was so knowledge, patient, and energetic. We had so much fun!”

“Overall, we had an amazing time with Galakiwi. We were really fortunate to have Tim lead us through 90% of this trip. His personal attention to many details was very appreciated. • I cannot wait to take another trip with Active South America

“Tim and Eduardo could not have been better. My group was very cohesive - we plan on getting together soon when we are visiting each others' home cities. We have opened our homes to each other. Words cannot describe the experience. Most of us had never been on a tour before and had reservations about traveling with the same "strangers" for ten days. After the first dinner, we knew that we would become lifelong friends. It was a special treat to have Tim on our trip. He provided a totally different insight than Eduardo - he was the task master, he had no fear of sharks or cold water, he opened up his office every AM with fresh pressed coffee! Eduardo was always eager to answer our questions and offerred us opportunities on his home island of Santa Cruz on New Year's Eve that gave us a unique insight into living on one of the Galapagos Islands. No one should go to the Galapagos unless they go on an Active South America cruise!”

“Take plenty of camera memory - the views on the Condor trip are never ending! The 4 day trek (though it turned into five - even better) in Torres Del Paine National Park was the highlight - just the right mix of challenge, views, and creature comforts. All of the guides were exceptional and the two weeks went without a hitch. Cynthia did an amazing job.

  • Condor trip and our guides

“Condor trip is and will be always an outstanding destination, regardless of weather winds and all... for nature there speaks volumes but to have had such excellent guides, namely Cynthia and Jayd made this trip all the more unique... man they really infuse energy and vibration on every moment of our hike, come rain or shine or very strong winds for that matter. We had a wonderful time together all along our " enterprise " the group was small and united and the mood was always good...thank you all.”
    – Rio Da Janeiro, Brazil Condor, December 2012
  • So well organized

“It was a relief not to have to plan anything and to know that our guide Arturo had it all under control. I felt that the trip logistics were really well thought out and gave us a good sampling of the area and of activities.”

  • Positively Patagonia in all its glory!

“Two weeks trekking, bussing, kayaking and various other modes of movement through spectacular scenery provided us with one of the most diverse fortnights of our lives. From basking in the southern sun savouring a lovely lunch in Puerto Natales to being swept up in a sudden snowstorm on the W we felt we truly were able to get a taste of this vast and unique part of the world.”
    – British Columbia, Canada Condor, December 2012

  • Absolutely fabulous!

“I was one of 15 people in our group for the Jaguar trip; we all got along great. Considering I was a solo traveler heading into the adventure, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I returned home with amazing friends from all over the world with whom I've shared many incredible experiences. Our guide, Arturo, was phenomenal. He took care of every single detail and went above and beyond our expectations every time. We had knowledgeable and experienced guides along the Inca Trail, in the Amazon, and on Lake Titicaca. Almost everything was above and beyond our expectations. This was an amazing experience overall, and I would happily take another vacation with Active South America.”

“Enjoyed staying on land and giving back to the locals, walking around town in the evening, etc. Jessica was a fountain of information and made us feel like a family, her family. It was a lot of fun to see all the things you hear about and never really think you will get a chance to actually do!”

  • Great Adventure

“Lots of various activities and Jhayro was able to improvise to make the trip special. The hacienda and horse back riding was great as was the descent of
Cotapaxi. We chose to do the white water rafting, great fun. The accommodations and food were very good. Don't forget to take a side trip to the Equator, worth the trip.”
    – New Hampshire, United States Tapir, December 2012
  • Fantastic trip

“It was an amazing trip and the guides and guests were fantastic. In addition to our head guide, we had "specialist" guides for each of the areas we visited. On the Inca trail, my husband and I were the laggards of our group and were quite late for lunch at one of our stops. You can imagine our shock to find two porters trudging up the mountain (quite a distance from our destination) to bring us lunch, including an assorment of hot teas! They were gracious, and stayed with us all the way to camp.
The only reason this trip did not get the trip of a lifetime designation is that we also took an Active New Zealand trip a few years ago, and can't decide which one we enjoyed more.”

  • Torres Del Cynthia - Another trip of a lifetime.

“Another trip of a lifetime. Some of the most stunning scenery I have witnessed from enormous glaciers and icebergs to stunning rock pillars and towering mountains. This trip had it all for me. The guiding was of the highest order and the food and accommodation a lot better than I had expected in such remote areas.”
    – Kent, United Kingdom Condor, December 2012
  • I really thought that this trip was up there with the very best

“Torres Del Cynthia. I really thought that this trip was up there with the very best experiences I have had. The scenery was stunning virtually all the way. The company was lively and friendly but the star was Cynthia who made us all feel so at ease and comfortable. The only black mark on the whole thing was having to use tents one night. It happened to be blowing a hoolie and snowing but overall 10 out of 10.”
    – Kent, United Kingdom Condor, December 2012
  • It was wonderful! I will never forget it.

“From start to finish, the trip was well planned and had just the right amount of activity and rest. Cynthia was a delight! She made us feel as if we were the best group that she had ever been in charge of. We all got along so well and there was room for some of us to deviate from the schedule when necessary. I appreciated her ever positive attitude and friendly nature. We saw amazing sights and met wonderful people everywhere we went. Peru is such a fascinating country with so many cultures and climates. All the people we met were open and welcoming. The local guides were very knowledgeable. They added so much to our experience with their interesting explanations. Bottom line: i loved it!”

“An amazing adventure. The trip included a great mix of singles and couples of all ages from all over the world. Eveything was very well organized. • Galapagos: Terrific Tortuga Tour

“We had such an amazing time on this trip! Until you go and experience it for yourselves, you just can't imagine the variety and the abundance of the wildlife, or how innocent and naive the animals are. They do not exhibit the "natural" fear of humans but rather lots of curiosity and allow you to come right into their realm! The giant sea turtles and land tortoises are unforgettable and a real highlight. We enjoyed all the activities we got to do, especially the snorkelling. Being in our 60's we still participated in it all. This organization takes care of all the details for you- Jessica guided us through every experience and gave all the explanation [in flawless English] that you could possibly hope for. We'll be thinking about all we saw and did for a long time to come!”
    – Nova Scotia, Canada Tortuga, November 2012
  • This was a great way to see the Galapagos Islands.

“This was a great way to see the Galapagos Islands. We enjoyed hikeing, biking, kayaking, snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming, boat rides, dancing on the beach, and so much wildlife everywhere it was incredible. All of this was done with great guides and in the case of scuba diving, very professional & competent dive masters. Our group was super and it was a lot of fun experiencing all of these new adventures with them. I highly recommend this company & this trip for anyone wanting to experience the Galapogos Islands.”
    – Nova Scotia, Canada Tortuga, November 2012

  • Jessica is a great guide, very knowlegable and informative

“Jessica is a great guide, very knowlegable and informative not just on the animals and plants, but on the economic information on the islands. Her assistant, Christian, even though there was a language problem, he was very observant and helpful to all the members of the group, a lot of potential.”
    – Michigan, United States Tortuga, November 2012
  • We loved it!

“The people in charge everywhere were terrific. Jessica was the best guide ever! And our travel companions were delightful. If you love nature go on this trip. And stay on the individual islands instead of a cruise ship. You will see so much more.

We chose late October/ early November and were pleased with the weather.”
    – Florida, United States Tortuga, November 2012
  • WOW for Nature

“Truly a trip of a lifetime. Active SA made every minute count. Reliable, well-informed and protective tour leader Jessica was an excellent guide. Unmatched volcano trek and views. Half the fun was getting there. The snorkeling was stupendous with sea lions playfully doing cartwheels at arms reach. Incandescent blue starfish, stingrays and a family of sea turtles that were underwater with us sent me laughing with excitement! We saw whales during our boat ride and detoured to follow them. So many birds, fish, iguanas and even lucked out with penguins. The hotels were stupendous in their simplicity and location was perfect. On San Cristobal, the hotel was stone throw away from beach! The activities were for the young at heart including the two 70-year-old men in our group. If you love nature, water, sea, land and air creatures, then this is THE trip to save up for. Maria B. • Jaguar trip exceeded my expectations

“Great trip. Exceeded my expectations - scenery was awesome, local people were friendly, food was delicious, there was a good variety of activities and logistics were well taken care of. What really made the trip was the others in the groups that we shared the experience with and, most importantly, Arturo. I would recommend that any friend or family member take a trip that he is leading. He has a fun personality, he really seems to enjoy the people on his trips and he is so knowledgeable and passionate about anything Peruvian. Lots of great memories.”

  • Great time with great people

“The best way to discover Ecuador is with Jhayro and the best local guides. We visited places, we saw things I don't think we would have without Jhayro. Having a guide that loves his country like he did made me see the place through his eyes, and what a beautifull country it is. Thank you Jhayro. You are the best.”
    – Quebec, Canada Tapir, November 2012
  • Trip Leader and Details Key

“The Jaguar trip was fun, eventful, and tiring; everything I look for in a trip! It combined the activeness of an outdoors trip with the luxury of having everything planned out so there was no need to worry about timing, safety, or getting everything in. I especially enjoyed meeting new people of all ages and locales, culminating in memorable experiences and and fun adventures. Thank you!”
    – California, United States Jaguar, November 2012
  • Trip of a lifetime!

“We had a fantastic time on this trip! The Galapagos Islands are so breathtakingly beautiful & by staying on land instead of a boat we feel like we really got to soak up the best of all the islands visited & support the local economy more. We were impressed by both the accommodations & the food that was included in the tour. The included activities were also great, we got to visit all the highlights of each island and see tons of wildlife but we still had plenty of free time to do our own thing as well. Last but not least, our guide Jessica did a wonderful job, she was a wealth of information about the islands & a blast to hang out with.”
    – Washington, United States Tortuga, October 2012
  • This trip cannot be missed, way, way beyond our expectations !!!

“Simply the most amazing adventure. We felt like we were the only people there, and some times, in some places that was the case. A brilliant holiday -- we were on the go, we saw so much, we had so much fun. Truly one of our best ever adventures.

The organisation from start to finish was brilliant, we were treated as royalty. Operators and guides always ready and available, from an early morning coffee and chat before snorkel/dive to sunset drinks and dining like kings.

Checking out the turtles within arms reach and happy to play, turn your head to iguanas swimming past, giant starfish, penguins feeding under you and then the smiling face of a seal in front of your mask wanting to play, and play we did ... and we have only jumped in!

This trip cannot be missed, way, way beyond our expectations !!!”

  • I rarely give five stars. This one is deserved!

“The Jaguar trip exceeded our expectations thanks to fine weather, a small and compatible group of travel companions, and a tour guide par excellence in Arturo! Arturo was a wonderful cultural ambassador informing us in great deal about local customs, flora, fauna, foods, language, history, and more. He was highly organized and punctual while managing multiple logistical details efficiently. He nursed us when we were sick and even prepared our snacks. He radiated pride in his country. Further, his experience traveling abroad made him appreciate what it is like to feel "like a duck out of water." As a result, he was very attentive to smoothing out our travels in a new culture with lots of advance guidance and information. Best of all was Arturo's sense of humor! I am at a loss to imagine how he could have performed any better for all of us. I rarely give five stars. This one is deserved!”

  • Cynthia was an AMAZING trip leader!!!

“Cynthia was an AMAZING trip leader!!!

She was enthuastic and very instrumental toward insuring that we all had a safe and amazing Pervian Adventure. She taught us the customs and traditions of the local people. Bought us local treats and gave us informative advice on where to go and what to do on our free time in each city.

She was also helpful in providing medical aid. During my trip I had a very bad eye infection, Cynthia helped me get the medication I needed to quickly resolve my eye problem. Other trip members had bouts with altitude sickness that Cynthia provided medication to releive their issues.

A caring touch and a warm personality.”

  • It was a wonderful, epic holiday, well organised by Active

“We are family of five from the UK - parents plus three ages 14-22. We took the full Jaguar tour, preceding it with a few days of acclimatisation in Cusco we had arranged ourselves. It was a wonderful, epic holiday, well organised by Active, who were very flexible in adapting the itinerary to meet our dates, and also when some of us fell briefly ill with salmonella poisoning immediately prior to the tour itself. We took the Lares trail, trekking up to over 15,000 feet. It was immensely beautiful, the achievement of making the high pass making up for the hard work along the way. Watching the sun rise over Machu Picchu as it burnt off the mist was everything we could have imagined it would be. The floating islands on Titicaca were fascinating. We ended the tour swimming in a tributary of the Amazon, something to remember in itself. Although the tour itself was magnificent, it was made all the more enjoyable by our tremendous tour leader, Arturo Rojas, who thoroughly entertained us for the whole trip and looked after every detail; and his excellent team of local guides, particularly Isaac on the Lares trail.”

“I did the first part of the Jaguar trip with the Lares Trek choice. It was just amazing!! Beautiful scenery, mouth watering food, wonderful little extras that were nice surprises just when we needed them, great guides and top rate gear. I will definetely travel with Active again. The trip was well organized, allowed for some downtime if I choose, lots of options on our free days and truly the best travel company I have used.”

  • Best Trip Ever and Yes ACTIVE!!!

“We were always busy doing something and seeing something, Bike riding, seeing ruins, enjoying local food, Hiking, We did not have Arturo with us on The Inca Trail, Instead we had Chris and Victor, who we would not have traded for anyone, Chris was full of knowledge, always teaching us new things about Inca life, and Victor was extremely helpful getting us through our hard days of hiking. Seeing Machu Picchu was worth it though, truly amazing. Both great guys and great guides. It was sad to leave them when the hike was over. Next we had a free day and Arturo mapped us out all the right places to eat and visit, making that a great day too. Then off to the jungle, this was also an amazing adventure, Arturo leading us the whole way, we took a bus, then a plane, then a bus again, then a boat to our lodge. We did not know what to expect, it was almost dark, we were walking down this dark path and then WOW, this amazing lodge in front of us. The rooms were also amazing with our own hammock in our room. The next day we did so much with our Amazon guides George and Johan - we hiked, rode canoes, fed piranhas. Had free time visited a local farm and swam in the river too. If you don't mind being ACTIVE, this is a fabulous vacation!!!”

  • You can't put a price on that.

“Have you ever completed a goal and then realized it was the journey to that goal that shifted your spirit into its higher divine understanding? My trip to Peru was more then just a vacation it was a spiritual experience of personal growth. The best thing about this journey was that I was not alone. From the tour guides to my fellow group companions, each person contributed, motivated, and assisted me in this shift.

New adventures arose from every place we visited. All human senses were awakened. The crisp air on the Lares trail filled lunges and rejuvenated, the screaming wind biking down the Sacred Valley danced on ears and energized, the historical ground under hiking feet balanced and uplifted the soul, the sun kissed cheeks from Amazon were sweet and warm. All these experiences contributed to my still thoughts that were filled with gratitude and humbleness.

So the big question, "what was your favorite part of the trip?" is what most people want to know. We saw so many amazing sites but for me it was the orphanage we visited. Arturo, our tour leader, on his day off took us to El Hogar de las estrellas. It provided a great experience to see the children of Peru, especially those in need. There was the most amazing spirited women, her name was Martha, she was one of the women running the orphanage. She stands out in my mind as a truly fulfilled women giving only her time and love to those children of Peru. To me Martha represented the spirit of the Pachamama because she was filled with love. They say the Pachamama is a good mother and Martha was more then a mother to those children she was their lifeline. She reminded me to be filled with the spirit of Pachamama and carry love from Peru out into my world here in Northern Virginia, USA.

When you can come back from such an amazing trip and your spirit was shifted by other human beings it reminds us we are really not all the different. And that love and giving are the common values that can unite and bring forth shifts towards the betterment of all mankind. You can't put a price on that.

I offer a toast to Pachamama, our mother earth, reminding us of our own reflection within her embodiment.

This is a video of our thoughts as a group on our last night together. It is not the best shooting - but it is a true testament to how life-changing these trips can be. Also, it shows the true heart our tour leader Arturo, his efforts were always way above and beyond. He has a true spirit of giving and he has a lot of love and pride for his country. If you have 9 minutes, you should watch. I'm shooting the video.

  • Fantastic holiday. Still can't get over how amazing it was.

“Everything about it was great. Cynthia was brilliant. knowledgable and made everything run smoothly. And the other guides are also brilliant. If anyone has any doubts, I would say don't worry and just book!!! My kids loved every minute from the jungle to Lake Titicaca. Two complaints...... 1) it wasn't long enough!!! Could have done with another 2 weeks, and 2) Cynthia taught my kids some more card games and I no longer win. :(. Chatted to my kids about the review to put down the top ten highlights and could not agree on less than fourty!!!”

  • Bucket List item accomplished!!

“I just wanted to thank your company and especially our trip leader, Cynthia Valladares, for making my Peruvian adventure so exciting and complete. I researched several companies prior to making my final decision and I know that I made the absolute best choice. I was the "odd man out" on this trip that included two families of four with children of approximately the same ages - 10 to 13. I was graciously adopted by one of the families and Cynthia was also a great friend and took the time to give me a private tour of Cuzco while the families did their own thing. I can't thank you enough for my Bucket List's success.”

  • A fantastic once-in-a-lifetime trip and my second with ACTIVE.

“You can ride around in a tour bus if you want, but hiking, biking, and kayaking in Peru gives you something to smile about when you're telling friends what you did this summer. A fantastic once-in-a-lifetime trip and my second with ACTIVE. The food in Peru was just as terrific as the scenery, everywhere we went - whether hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu or on a floating reed island in Lake Titicaca. From Pacific Ocean to Andes, ancient city to rainforest, this trip to Peru was an unforgettable experience.”

“Nature in all its splendor! The wonderful tour of the Amazon, full of surprise, mystery and beauty! Visiting the Imperial city of Cusco, we appreciated its monuments and stone walls full of history that seem to be reborn when you walk through its century old streets. The kayaking adventure of navigating the impressive Lake Titicaca.... with the breath taking view of the snow cap mountains of Bolivia...

  • Like no other place in the World!

“The Galapagos are like nothing else in the world. The Ecuadorian government has done an excellent job in restoring and is always trying to preserve the true beauty of the Galapagos. If you happen to go and have Pablo as your guide, it will be the most memorable trip you'll ever have. He is hands down one of the best guides I have ever had. The Galapagos, and the world for that matter, will always be in a better place with Pablo in it. His passion for nature and excitement for sharing it is contagious. Listening to him speak, was like hearing a sermon. He was a huge a part of how much I enjoyed his county home. I highly recommend this once in a lifetime trip to all!”
    – California, United States Tortuga, August 2012
  • Amazing in every way

“Seeing the Galapagos from the islands themselves is definitely the way to go. We could stroll the beach at night or stargaze, and have dinner at restaurants on the water that gave the experience a much more local feel. It was also fun just to explore the islands all day without the need to get back to a boat. The snorkeling was spectacular, as were the hikes and kayaking. I love Active South America and am already looking forward to a trip with them to Patagonia!”

  • We wanted to do something extra special...

“Wow --- after 4 days of hiking it was an exhilarating feeling to stand on the precipice and re-create that famous National Geographic photo of Machu Picchu. It was even better to celebrate our accomplishment as a family.

We wanted to do something extra special before my son heads to college this fall. Peru did NOT disappoint: rich in culture and history, diverse geography and breathtaking scenery, passionate people and extraordinary cuisine -- Thanks to our guides Arturo and Navidad, Active South America and the rest of the team, we have many laughs and memories to share over a lifetime. You are the best!!”

  • Wow; what an amazing trip!

“As a biology teacher, a Galapagos Island adventure was always on my "Bucket List". I've always imagined how awesome it would be to be able to experience the wonders of the islands. It far exceeded my expectations.

Pepo, our Active South America guide, made that possible. His passion, knowledge, and observable love for his job allowed us to appreciate the unique place that we were far beyond what we could have on our own.

This will not be last trip we take with Active. Thank you so much for the adventure.”

  • Great Expectations

“This trip has been planned for such a long time and, after careful research, we chose Active South America for the blend of culture and physical activity. The trip far exceeded our expectaions. Cynthia, our trip leader was exceptional. She could not have been a more pleasant addtion to our trip and was thoughtful, knowledgeable, flexible, calm, efficient and effective. Knowing very little about Peru before this trip, the Capybara tour was the perfect way to learn so much about this amazing country. Thank you.”

  • Wonderful family experience, exceptional guide

“Our family of 5 really enjoyed our trip to Peru. Our guide, Arturo, was exceptional. He shared his vast knowledge of Peru with us, took us to amazing restaurants, and really made sure our children had a great experience. The trip required a large amount of travel between sites, which cannot be avoided, but he always kept us entertained. We were exhausted at the end of the trip and have many wonderful pictures and memories.”

  • Galapagos June 2012 - I would highly recommend this trip

“I could not give this trip Awesome, the trip of a lifetime, because I have had many amazing trips in my lifetime. However, I would rate it in the top 5, and that is saying something as after our Tortuga trip we went to Machu Picchu and that is also in my top five. Our guide Zambo was absolutely amazing. He is a walking encyclopedia. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to really experience the Galapagos.”

  • Fabulous for Fifty

“I chose this trip to Peru in celebration of turning 50 this year. I have always wanted to visit the area. I was not at all disappointed. It was an amazing trip with a perfect combination of culture and activity. Our Tour Leader, Cynthia, was amazing and made the trip for us all. The sights, the people and the history all made such an impact on me. I would do it over again in a heartbeat!”

“We had a great trip & really appreciate the flexibility of shortening the trip to allow us to head over to Easter Island while we were in the Southern Hemisphere! • One of my greatest life experiences so far!

“The Jaguar trip covered everything I wanted to do in Peru and also included some adventures I'm so glad I got to participate in! Machu Picchu and the Amazon Rainforest are what drew me to choose the trip. I also knew I wanted to be active and adventurous in South America. After the trip, I feel accomplished, and learned to love a handful of new things: Peruvian food, mountain biking, kayaking! Arturo was amazing, sharing his love for and knowledge of his country with us along with his contagious good mood! Additionally, Ruben was a wonderful guide to have along with us on the Lares trail and Natalia's passion for the rainforest made that segment of the trip that much more enjoyable.”

  • Best part of the trip was definitely our tour guide, Carlos

“I had to leave a week early unfortunately, but for the first week I was there I did enjoy the trip. The hike to Machu Picchu was much more than I bargained for, but being in shape got me through it. The city of Cusco was delightful and I enjoyed the hotel and surrounding area. The food choices were awesome and well-planned. The hike days sometimes got boring in the afternoon when camp was set up and there wasn't much to do, but we had a good group to keep company with. I was there had been more to look at on the hike and less of the actual hiking part. By the time we arrived to Machu Picchu, everybody was so exhausted that we only stayed about 2 hours walking around. We were ready for some sort of civilization again! Anyways, the best part of the trip was definitely our tour guide, Carlos. He was from the area, knew it extremely well, was informative at all times, but most importantly was always concerned about having a good time and taking things at our own pace. Carlos never rushed things, and understood that this was a vacation for everybody involved. His humor and randomness also kept things interesting, and if nothing else Carlos always provided a good laugh, even when some of us weren't in much of a laughing mood. I would highly recommend Carlos again, and if I happen to be down there on my own in the future, I'll want to meet up with Carlos.”

“It was at a time in my life when I needed some kind of new adventure, something I hadn't experienced yet, and this was full of new experiences. Changed my perspective on life and my life and made me realize how amazing life can be, no matter how simple or how complex. This was a great trip and led by great people. thank you”

“Our guide, Pablo, was fabulous. Very knowledgeable and made sure everyone got to participate and saw as much as possible. Our intern, Carlie, was always cheerful, helpful and willing to do what was asked of her. I was impressed with how Pablo instructed Carlie whenever there was down time, so the team was always on the same page with everything.”

“This trip allowed us to really experience so much of what an Active trip is all about - from bike "gliding" down the mountains into Pisac, following a nomadic windpipe player through the Andean hills as we hiked to enjoying local cuisine with a great group of new friends. And Machu Pichu is absolutely amazing.”

  • Do you Peru? You should!

“I have been fortunate to have quite a few trips of a lifetime, but this was certainly one of them. Where to begin? Our overall guide, Cynthia, was terrific. She was so good at anticipating what her individual clients would want or need and also do small thoughtful things that made the trip even more special. By the end of the trip, she was more than just a guide. Our local guide on the Inca Trail, Chris, was superb. He knew when to step back and when to step up. His love of Incan culture was infectious. His knowlegde of it, the trail, and all of its ruins, including Machu Picchu, were encyclopedic. He added so much to that challenging part of the journey. We were lucky to have him. The monkeys, macaws, other wildlife, and the lodge in the rainforest were spectacular. The culture on the islands in Lake Titicaca were revelatory. The sunset and stars breathtaking. All the Peruvians were so nice. The food, whether it was on the trail, in a restaurant, or any other place was delicious, healthy and plentiful. The scenery, everywhere was something to see. So yeah, overall, it was an amazing adventure.”

  • This trip was our honeymoon, and it was amazing.

“This trip was our honeymoon, and it was amazing. From the moment we met our guide Yohn on day one (we were late due to the wedding) to the final day in Lima we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. This was due to the amazing activities and fascinating locations and extensive coordination and efforts of our guide(s) to make all the moving pieces come together - no small feat with a multi-national group bouncing (hiking, biking, kayaking, bussing and flying) around the mountains and cities and lakes of Peru. Our hike up the Lares Trail was perhaps our favorite part, and the surprise of a wedding cake after breakfast, baked in a tent by our cooks/porters way up in the mountains of Peru above the clouds and out in the middle of NOWHERE, was one of the highlights of the trip and just a small indicator of the efforts made behind the scenes by our guides, porters and cooks to make the trip truly special.

Other highlights of the trip for us include the excursion into the jungle, Machu Picchu of course, visiting the floating Islands on Lake Titicaca, and then meeting and staying in a local home on one of the islands of the lake.

Then there were the small things that we'll remember that can't be adequately described in any brochure, like meeting and seeing the children on the mountain as we hiked the Lares Trail, standing in the pitch dark on the island under a vast blanket of stars and seeing the Southern Cross for the first time, leaning out of the canoe to watch the piranhas feed on a piece of bread (and fingers!) in the water, tasting Alpaca in a delicious mushroom gravy, smelling the humid aroma of the jungle in the darkest dark of night as we hiked with our flashlights, walking through the farm in the jungle and tasting fruits we'd never even new existed, sitting on the top of the slowest boat on the PLANET as we made our way through the reeds and islands of Lake Titicaca, experiencing all of this with a truly fascinating group of people from all over the world and so many more small things that we will remember for the rest of our lives.”

  • Female power team!!

“The 10 Girls and 1 Gent were an awesome team and we melted together well over the days. We really enjoyed the knowledge, understanding and attentiveness of Pablo, blows your mind. Physically a bit on the weak side except when we did 6 snorkels in a day and the hike. Was a bit disappointed in the cycle 8km is a joke if you're really a biker and the kayak was very limited.”

  • Fantastic Experience -- Highly Recommend.

“We did the May 27th 2 week Jaguar trip on the Lares trail (or should I say trial?). We made wonderful friends, challenged ourselves, and saw the most incredible scenery. The Lares trail was a real challenge, not a flimsy substitute for the Inca trail. Bring warm clothes! Arturo was a wonderful guide. We were in terrific hands every minute. The food was terrific and oh so plentiful. Lodging was sufficient. A great value for the price. Highly recommend.”

  • Fantastic Trip

“Our recent trip with Active SA (Jaguar) was the trip of a lifetime. This company thought of everything and really made my first trip to South America wonderful. • Astonishing Wonders By Land and By Sea!

“I have visited nearly 30 countries in the world and this was definitely the most enjoyable, action packed adventure I have been a part of. It seemed like every moment we were discovering something new or standing in awe of the natural scenery and wildlife. Our guide helped us get in the right place at the right time and answered our questions. We got to swim and walk just a few feet away from sea lions, sharks, eagle rays, turtles, iguanas and tortoises just to name a few. We had a most memorable honeymoon and the trip gave us about the right amount of break time and active time. We took so many pictures and videos that I have not even been able to watch them all yet. Needless to say, it was awesome!”

  • As someone who never thought they would take a group trip...

“As someone who never thought they would take a group trip, I cannot recommend this adventure enough. Great trip, great people, extremely well organized. Arturo was a fabulous guide, balancing all the details, rerouting around problems, keeping everyone entertained and providing great insight into the culture and environs. Our trip was challenging, fun, tiring at times, always rewarding. We would definitely go with Active again and highly recommend Arturo Rojas as a guide.

Our only quibble would be that more time in the jungle, less time traveling from Amazon to Cusco to Puno would improve the final leg of the journey. There must be a way to go directly from Puerto Maldonado to Puno and save a precious time for Amazon and Lake Titicaca.

But really, a trip of a lifetime!”
    – Virginia, United States Jaguar, June 2012
  • Peru 2012 - physically challenging and mentally rewarding.

“My wife and I had very rewarding experience on our Peru adventure. The trip was physically challenging and mentally rewarding.

The two main components of the adventure were the members of our group and our tour leader, Arturo. Before leaving, Sue and I were a little uneasy with the fact we were twice as old as the youngest members of our group. However, age was not a factor. All members of the group were able to laugh at each other and ourselves. It was one of the most enjoyable groups of people we have ever encountered. The sense of accomplishment with each phase of the trip bound us together.

Arturo is a extremely gifted individual. He is truly a "people person," fluent in both Spanish and English, knowledgeable of history, traditions, lodging, foods and his ability to coordinate the countless details of the trip was absolutely amazing. His sense of humor set the tone for an awesome trip.”
    – Michigan, United States Jaguar, June 2012
  • “Our Jaguar trip was awesome! We can't say enough about our guide Arturo Rojas. He made each day fun and willingly shared his insight as to the culture, customs, food and life in Peru. We couldn't have asked for more from him. What a treasure your company has in hiring Arturo.”

  • Sensational South America

“Our trip down to Chile and Argentina with Cynthia was absolutely phenomenal! Having previously travelled down to New Zealand with Active, we knew we could certainly expect another trip of a lifetime, but we had no idea just how unforgettable it would be. Active has the uncanny ability to bring such a variety of people (different backgrounds, different ages, different personalities, different ability levels) together on each trip to form an extended family vacation. Having the itinerary planned each day such that all you have to keep track of are the camera and any stragglers allows for continuous, stress-free, breath-taking adventures every moment of the trip!”
    – Texas, United States Condor, May 2012
  • Great trip!

“We had a fantastic time on our trip...we loved the mix of outdoor and historical/educational activities, and the food was great. Even when we had to take some time away from the group for a short bit due to medical reasons, Active SA helped us sort everything out and get back with the group as quickly as possible. Also, we owe many thanks to Cynthia, who was such a friendly, awesome guide!”

  • Awesome guide, mediocre orgainization

“Although the guide was one of the best I have every had in his knowledge and love of the country, the organizational problems marred the trip. We had one day when we had to skip biking entirely because of logistics.”

  • Overall fine, but disappointing as an active tour.

“Level of activity on this tour not suitable for fit people looking for an active tour. A level of disorganisation which interfered with some of the cultural and physical aspects of this tour.”

  • Fabulous people, places and activities!

“What made this trip exceptional were the people we got to spend our 10 days with. We were fortunate to have people from all different countries and ages - from 16 to 60. We couldn't have asked for a better group. We all got along and had a lot of laughs along the way. The Galapagos is a wonder, and it was a very well planned and active trip. We were very busy every day and night, but I appreciated having some down time towards the end of the trip. Highlights were the 7 hour hike on Isabela, seeing and swimming with a Whale Shark, the animals, tortoises and Pablo! This is a trip for people who want to be active and get more of a sense for the Islands rather than being on a boat or being holed up in a fancy hotel. One of the accommodations wasn't great but it was only for a night and we survived. All in all so glad I booked this trip- it was amazing!”
    – New York, United States Tortuga, May 2012
  • The trip was nowhere near active enough.

“I really enjoyed my time in Peru. In relation to the tour, I felt that the:
The hiking on the Lares Trail was excellent and the food while hiking was great. I wished more of the tour was like this! The islands and homestay on lake titticaca were also great. The kayaking was also a great experience, the equipment was very good quality and it gave us a chance to go at our own pace. I also really enjoyed the Amazon tour and accommodations. I have been on many active tours around the world ranging from travelling rough through to fully supported tours. Thus I would like to think I have some good grounds for providing constructive feedback.

It's sad to say that this trip was by far the most disappointing.
Most of my constructive comments relate to the itinerary and organisation of the tour.
The itinerary really over promised and under delivered (that was if/and we followed it). Looking at the trip notes and what we actually did - they were two extremely different experiences. The trip was nowhere near active enough. The cycling was extremely disappointing, we only did 25km downhill on bikes and helmets which were of poor safety standard (nearly all the helmets were broken and the brakes on most bikes were not up to standard). We did one other hour of downhill, which felt more like a rushed add on than an enjoyable experience. This trip offers no worthy cycling experience. We really only hiked on two days (Lares Trail), the others were short walks. Seldom could these be done at your own pace.

Appreciating that things don't always go to plan, we did not follow the itinerary very well, spending two extra nights in Cuzco. This resulted in many "wasted" hours in additional bus transit and meaning we missed out on time in towns like Pisac and Ollyantombo. It always felt as though we were waiting... often for no apparent reason. When you are only in a country for two weeks, and have spent a fortune on flights to get there, every hour of the day is valuable. Compared to previous trips, this tour wasted so much time. I think the itinerary needs to be carefully reviewed.

The boat ride to the islands was terrible. On the first day, what was meant to take 3 hours took closer to six. This meant we got less time on the islands and we did not have enough time to do the "active part" - the full hike. This was a common theme, whenever we ran behind schedule, the first thing to be sacrificed was the active activity!

I felt the accommodations were fine, however some of the local restaurants chosen were far below average (would've rather gone to street food vendors).

I had a great time in Peru and met some wonderful people on the tour. However, I would not personally recommend this tour. It was well below expectations and I hope some of the above comments can help improve the experience for future travellers.”

“Absolutely incredible trip! The sites of Peru were amazing, really enjoyed the Lares Trail, Machu Picchu, Rainforest, and Lake Titicaca. As wonderful as the sites were, the people were even better. Yohn was a great tour leader and was so friendly and funny. Thanks for the great memories, Active and Yohn!”

  • The Pleasure of a Perfect Peru

“I could write a thousand words about how exquisitely memorable my Peru trip was. I could write a million more about our trip guide, and the team of guides, cooks, porters and drivers he orchestrated like a Philharmonic conductor through the icy Andes... and the Inca wonderlands... Cusco, Pisac, Calientes, Puno and its Lake Titikaka. And and in the dripping Amazon dream-jungle. I could tell you about how this guide unveiled a mysticism and a beauty in everything he showed us, through his passion for his native Peru. But I'll keep it simple because you need to understand just one thing... the Jaguar trip is one of the things I will think about as I lie dying one day. It was simply that unforgettable. Thank you so much to Yohn!”

“I have been looking forward to going to the Galapagos for a long time and I love being active, so this trip seemed perfect for me. It did not disappoint me. I loved hiking, kayaking, snorkling and biking all over the Galapagos. The guide, Pablo, was the best guide I have ever had on a trip. He explained the unique plants, animals and geology of the Galapagos in a exciting and fun way. I highly recommend this trip to anyone. It was so amazing so all the animals up close but still in their wild environment.”

I've really enjoyed thanks to professional guides and nice people we've met. Islands were so beautiful and I've never seen animals and birds so close to us. There are not so many places I'd like to feel going again as I'd like to go to see new places but Galapagos is definitely the place that I'd like to come back soon. I appreciate Pablo-san, Tim-san and Nick-san who made trip really enjoyable for everyone.”

  • As a single person travelling alone I highly recommend this trip

“Excellent trip! Peru is a beautiful country with fabulous people. An incredible culture rich experience.

Our Jaguar trip was well organized with a fabulous tour leader. Arturo handled with ease anything that was thrown at him. Requests for doctor visits, requests to visit sites not included in the itinerary and even meal requests were all handled with good humour and a smile. He made the trip experience just that much better as we literally had nothing at all to worry about.

As a single person travelling alone I highly recommend this trip.”

  • “The trip was well organized and our trip leader, Yohn, was incredibly accommodating (I'm a picky eater and all he could say was "No problem!"). The itinerary was well balanced with some active time (hiking/walking), down time (shopping or down hill biking) and alone time (free days and time in between activities and meals). Peru is a gorgeous country with varied landscapes (I went on the 10 day trip so missed out on the Lake Titicaca portion) and delicious food. If there was one bit of false advertising in ASA's blurb about this trip, it would be the notion that we would return home energized and refreshed. In fact, I am currently experiencing post vacation blues and wish I was back in Peru! I consider myself an active person and I felt that this trip was perfectly balanced-- giving me some heart pumping days while not making me feel that I was in boot camp. All our guides (Yohn, Olga-Machu Picchu, Frank- Amazon) were knowledgable and provided fantastic insight. A perfect blend of learning a new culture/history and being active!”
    – Oregon, United States Jaguar, April 2012
  • “The trip to the Andes, as well as the rainforest, was truly the trip of a lifetime. Our guide Arturo was a wealth of knowledge along the trip, and very friendly as well. It was like having a friend along that knew everything about the history, architecture, and culture of the area. The hike through the Inka Trail was especially difficult for me, just due to my incredible fear of heights. Our guide on the trail, Gerson, was amazing at trying to keep my mind of the the heights when we were walking along the steep ridges. He stayed by my side and never made me feel bad about my fear. I would never have been able to do it without him, and I'm grateful for that. The rainforest, and especially the lodge, were also spectacular. We were successful in seeing several species of monkey, pirhana, and countless large insects. Thank you all for a great trip!!

  • "I am suffering from over exposure to pure awesomeness"

“That was the quote from our 11-year-old after just two days of this trip. The activities provided us the adventure we were looking for on this trip. From cycling down a volcano to horseback riding in the Andes and climbing up a waterfall, this trip epitomized Active. And our guide, Jhayro, was great with our kids.”

  • Great Itinerary!

“All in all would recommend this tour. Loved what we saw! Having a guide stay with us the entire tour, in our opinion, was very important. Meals were awesome and even got added perks such a show with dinner and bottles of wine twice! Hotels only so so. Transportation was great! Definitely an adventure!!!!”

  • One of my favorite trips

“Most of my trips have been cycling but this is my 2nd multi-sport trip. The first was 9 years ago with Active New Zealand. I can't say enough about how enjoyable both were. This last one to the Galapagos was very special. I am now 72 and had some concerns but I was able to accomplish most of the planned outings. My favorite part was the snorkling. Although our leader Pepo was knowledgeable about all aspects of the trip, he was exceptional with the underwater creatures. I caught on quickly to stay close to him because he would spot the most camaflaged and hidden samples of natures wonders. I liked that we stayed on the islands.
I also went body boarding. Pepo arranged to rent a board. I told him I wanted a good one and what he located was perfect. (I used to be good at bodyboarding in California but it had been a number of years since I did this.) Although we had to hike over 2 miles to the ocean, it was worth it. After kayaking in the morning then hiking and bodyboarding, I was really tired but such a special day.”

  • Patagonia-more than just clothes

“I had heard great things about hiking in Patagonia from several people. Turns out, I hadn't heard nearly the whole story. From start to finish, this was an amazing trip. The landscape and scenery is as good as it gets. Sweeping vistas of snow capped peaks, meandering rivers, colorful valleys, Condors riding the thermals, massive granite towers, glaciers and alpine lakes of jade and turquoise. It was the kind of trip which invigorates the body and spirit. The tour leader was amazing in every way. Sweet and caring and knowledgable and willing to do anything to make our time as enjoyable as possible. The hikes were definitely challenging, but the rewards were well worth the effort. Food and accommodations were top notch, even in the more remotes areas. We were lucky to be in a group of terrific people, but I think the natural beauty of the land and the tireless efforts of Cinthia, our guide, would have made the vacation awesome, no matter what.”

  • Great Hiking

“This trip included some of the best, most beautiful hiking I have done. The trip was generally well planned, so it felt like a real vacation. The food we ate was much better than I expected.”

  • Well Organised tour, showing the highlights of Patagonia

“The tour enabled the group to get a great feel for the Patagonian region in a two week trip. Cynthia, the tour leader was great, ensuring the trip ran smoothly and catering for everyones needs: activity wise, diet wise and really made the trip! If you have a fortnight of annual leave to spare to explore Patagonia and want a stress free well organised tour, than I think your money is well spent on this trip.”

  • Will be asking for commission for my rave reviews!

“My Jaguar journey far exceeded expectations, was great value, educational, well organized and such a lot of fun. The Active guides were outstanding, Arturo went above and beyond the call of duty on every single occasion, mixing his finely tuned sense of humor with required empathy or support whenever required. He is indeed knowledgable and an impressive man of high calibre. Gerson impressed with his huge knowledge but even more admirable was his patience and support of team members whenever or wherever he was needed. ... One slight criticism ... Occasionally our guides were not totally prepared for the weather extremes and had to stand in t shirts in pouring rain or on the top of a hill in hail or howling wind... I realize probably not a ' do or die' situation but a $2 poncho works wonders. This is a very small flaw in an otherwise well oiled machine.
Another slight annoyance, but who knows how it could be changed, the rare occurrence of a hot shower in our hotel in Cuzco, this hotel otherwise worked perfectly for our home away from home, however a hot shower, even a time limited one, is an essential wind down after a long physical day and more often than not someone had been there first, alas luke warm at best.
Call me thick but I didn't totally understand the concept of leaving our larger bag in storage at our hotel and use our smaller sports bag for each individual 4 day journey. A friend who had earlier walked the Inca Trail ,explained the concept more fully and I was perfectly prepared and very happy with how the system worked. However, I didn't fully understand this concept from the website, maybe eliminate the information that we would use the porters special bags for the Inca trail, maybe this is too much info and makes the 2 bag concept confusing..... Or maybe it's just me!!!
I was just so happy to have been so well cared for by such outstanding guides that I have already sold the Active South America to 2 kiwi friends and will definitely become a repeat customer.
    Cheers Jo-Anne Walker”

  • Condor Trip Feb 19 - March 3

“What a fabulous trip! Patagonia is amazing, from the sights that will take your breath away to the people that will welcome you with a smile and open arms. Not knowing the language, I imagined I would feel overwhelmed. Cynthia was a fantastic bridge between cultures, always available to assist with traslations and constantly educating the group about the area and the people. Her love for the region is obvious and her excitement absolutely contagious! Fantastic trip with a fantastic leader!”

  • Didn't want to come home

“Our Condor trip was amazing. Our guide, Cynthia, was always prepared, organized, and smiling, and went out of her way to make sure everyone was happy and comfortable.
The hiking trails were well-maintained and took us to magnificent places, but the hikes are definitely not for couch potatoes!
Accomodations were clean and more modern than I expected, with friendly staff. The food was exceptional, with plenty of vegetarian options.
Overall, I'd give it an A+!”

  • Amazingly fun adventure

“The Condor is a great trip that hits the key spots in the Southern Patagonia region in a relatively short period of time (some of us have schedules, unfortunately). Its great for anyone into hiking and the outdoors. Amazing photography opportunities with wonderful people await on action packed days of outdoor adventure.”

  • Patagonia with Cynthia and Active SA!

“What an amazing trip. Much more than I expected. The scenery, the people and the weather cooperating every day. It was wonderful to spend time with like minded travel friends. We all got to know each other by doing what we love.
    Keep up the good work!

This is my third active trip.

Cynthia was great at the organization of each stop and she made sure each participant was really for each day. She also has great networking skills, we ate at some great restaurants, got to try local food and meet some amazing people in each place we expected.”

  • Condor Trip Highlights

“Patagonia weather,we discovered, is very unpredictable and so our Condor trip did not follow the itinerary as printed in the brochure. The day could start out sunny and warm but by days end it could have snowed. this meant our guide Cynthia and the local guide had to monitor the weather and at times plans were altered. Because of the high winds our kayaking trip was cancelled, however a beautiful half day trek took its place. That was one of the highlights for me. The mountain scenery was picturesque and we got wonderful views of condors on the wing and on the way there we had seen a small flock flamingos on a lake. The day we trekked up to see the Torre del Paine was overcast, wet, cold and on the way to the view as we trekked through the forest it snowed. It was spectacular. At the top, the mountains were covered it thick cloud but as we waited the cloud gradually lifted until the Torre del Paine towered above. It was magical . That was a highlight. The day we were to trek along the shore of Lake Nordenskjold and up the French Valley the wind was so strong that we had to be very watchful of the squalls of wind driven water blowing off the lake. Often we were drenched through and forced to run for cover or be blown over. At the French Glacier we could barely stand the wind was so strong. It was exhilarating. The next day the lake was like a mirror and the weather sunny and hot. It was amazing to experience these contrasts. The night before it had rained heavily and when it came to the river crossing it looked too dangerous to cross. Jay, the local guide, spent quite some time finding the safest spot to cross but this still meant wading across a raging stretch of river. It was an achievement to succeed without being washed away!! In Argentina the highlight was seeing the Perito Moreno Glacier. It is immense and you need to see it first hand to appreciate how magnificent it is. Another highlight was finding woodpeckers in the beech forest near El Chalten. I would like to say that our view of Monte Fitz Roy was a highlight but the weather was poor and thick cloud hid the peaks each day ( I saw Fitz roy from the plane as we flew up to Santiago). The highlight for that part of the trip was our hike up Lomo del Pliegue and the view was beautiful despite Fitz Roy still hidden in thick cloud.”

  • Amazing wildlife

“Vacation is evanescent; remembrance is indelible. We were lucky. Even though it's warm, rainy season, weather was quite cooperating as well as wildlife. We've seen frigate birds in love, giant tortoise mating, absolutely incredible. Two thumbs up for logistic in transportation. Our guide is superior than his super plan! Once again, a terrific experience with ACTIVE!”

  • Get ready to be active

“From start to finish this was an amazing trip. Within an hour of landing in the islands we were on the go. We kept a brisk pace throughout but did have time after dark to watch the night sky, a serious reminder of why we call our galaxy the milky way. On the last day we were still stopping to see tortoises, crawling through lava tubes, and checking out intriguing formations on the way to the airport.”

  • See them while you still can!

“If you are aiming to interact with wildlife- especially endemic species- Galapagos is the trip for you. The sea lions swirl about you as you snorkel amongst the marine iguanas and penguins. Cozy up to the giant endemic tortoises and see what is being done to preserve the species.”
    – Hawaii, United States Tortuga, March 2012
  • good time was had by all

“We've always traveled alone, so this was our first "tour." We enjoyed it thoroughly, but would have liked a few more nights on our own. We biked on our own on Isabella, and had a wonderful time stopping at all the national park sites along the way-- this would be an excellent addition to the "active" trip, better than the downhill cruising that happens on the first day of the trip. The guides are very knowledgeable, professional and friendly.”

  • Tapir with Jhayro

“Bill and I did feel this trip tried to do to much, we spent alot of time driving arround, and often felt pushed to keep the schedule not a great feeling when on holiday. Wish I had more time at Cotopaxi to explore terrian and wildflowers for example. Two days at the lovoly ranch would hve been nice more hoseback riding.Banos was great for one day not two.Amazon jungle was great lovely hut, would have liked to have spent more time exploring that area. The Termas Papallacta was to much a resort feeling for my taste.Jhayro was a very nice man, certainly looked after us well, he did make one feel we were on a trip and not having an adventure however always pushing us to keep the schedule. This trip would have been nice to a guide that was a naturalist willing to point things out to us.”

  • Galapagos - I am soo glad we chose this tour.

“Our destination was truly amazing. I wish we could have had more time to just sit with the animals but there was so much to do and see. Our tour guide Pablo was outstanding. • Tapir - 2 people do not make a trip

“I enjoyed most of the trip the views were awesome and the local people very friendly. The few activites I did were amazing and lots of fun and the accommodation apart from Banos. I joined this trip for the activites and meeting like minded folk so find 2 people do not make a trip and my one travelling companion although very nice was lacking in fitness so I ended up missing out on a few activities of which I was looking forward to. Next time I suggest you are more honest as I would not have booked.”

“Our trip to the Galapagos was amazing. We did not stop for one minute (OK - maybe 30 minutes but only for 1 day!). The diversity of landscape, vegetation, species created learning moments on a constant basis. This trip is not for the weak or faint of heart but it is a trip that everyone should take sometime during their life. thanks.....”

  • Ecuador - awesome diversity

“We loved the ever changing landscapes & great roads made driving several hours a day a pleasure. Jhayro was very flexible & when he & the group (3 others) found that Rick could not do the strenuous activities, he changed the agenda (ie went on a panga trip down the river & hiking around Papallacta). The food was varied and tasty and Banos was a very charming town.”

  • Galapagos December 2011 - what a fantastic experience!

“What a fantastic experience! Sitting on beaches next to slumped sea lions or posing iguanas was incredible. Not to mention snorkelling with over 200 sharks on Christmas Day - what a present! Then there were the beautiful turtles, so graceful, gentle and friendly and the Giant Tortoises ambling slowly through the grass. It really was the most memorable trip and I would definitely do it again!”

  • Fantastic execution of trip but issues between what you sell an

“Trip great in sense that it is flawless executed and guides outstanding. However it turn out to be more water based and less hiking biking and kayaking and way more snorkel based than I had expected. I am way more into land than water based and would perhaps not have come if I had known real program.
Also you should write that it is for confident swimmers only: I am not and that did take some enjoyment out of the trip. Again galakiwi are outstanding but your write up needs adjustment.”

  • The Greatest Backpacking/treking vacation we've done!

“We're hikers, so we knew in general what to expect from a backpacking trek, but your mountains are higher than ours & we're not the youngest hikers around, so were a little aprehensive. We needen't have worried. our experience had prepared us well! The trails in Patagonia were some of the best we've encountered, especially considering that the treks in both Torres del Paine and Glaciares National Parks are extremely popular. No roots, rocks etc for the most part and only "scrambles" toward the end of one hike... AND we only packed our OWN clothes & shared supplies added. The rewards were the most spectacular views we've ever seen!!! FANTASTIC! I'd do it again in a heartbeat.”
    – New York, United States Condor, February 2012
  • Patagonia - A trip to remember!

  • Never bored for even a moment.

“Never bored for even a moment. This trip is just non-stop. The itinerary can only tell you so much and everything happened as promised, but how do you describe the wonder of a mob of wild horses passing you while riding down a volcano? How do you share the laughter when falling into a pit of mud in the middle of a jungle. It's what's not in the brochure.”
    – Western Australia, Australia Tapir, February 2012
  • Tapir - This trip was a blast!!

“This trip was a blast!! Every day we had an exciting and active experience - bicycling down a volcano (rather scarey at first), river rafting in the rain (wonderful, we never even had to paddle except for the rapids), trekking through the jungle, up streams, through dark caves with bats (it was so exciting), and the best was reverse canyoning (what a thrill).
Hiro was a great guide and Christian was so funny and informative, just like a kid!

    Awesome experience.”
    – California, United States Tapir, February 2012
  • Tortuga - A fabulous week in the Galapagos.

“A fabulous week in the Galapagos. Every day was a new and exciting activity. Loved staying on the islands and the boat rides were refreshing (we "played" with a pod of dolphins). Galakiwi did a superb job of ensuring that all ran smoothly (and it did). Tim and Crystal are amazing. The snorkeling was awesome and all the knowledge that Pepo enthusiastically shared with us was so educational and interesting. He is the best! It was a fabulous week.”

  • Galapagos - It was a privilege to experience...

“It was a privilege to experience such a unique place with like minded people, and be shown it by such a knowledgeable young man. As a guide, Jose Louise (Pepo) was the best, and I don't say that lightly.”
    – Essex, United Kingdom Tortuga, February 2012
  • Johnson/Kincaid Galapagos Trip - Active took care of our needs

“As we experienced with our Active New Zealand bike trip a few years ago, Active took care of our needs. The tour guides were able to fit our interests and make the whole trip happen. The Galapagos are an amazing place in the world. The Active trip itnerary gave a great overview as well as indepth understanding of this remarkable place and the differences of each island. Staying on land gave an experience that would not be available by staying on a boat - it certainly was more "active".”
    – Colorado, United States Tortuga, February 2012
  • Patagonia, jaw-dropping beautiful

“The 'trip of a lifetime' cliche really applied to this one. The Rio Acensio Valley hike was beautiful. It's hard to match the classic Torres del Paine view you get when you pop over the final ridge, but the two big hikes near Fitz Roy did just that. Awesome hikes. We missed out on the French Valley hike due to the fires, but Active excels at adjusting to meet circumstances. They took us up the Bader Valley instead. Everyone in the group thought it was a great hike with great views. Given the circumstances there was nothing but praise for picking this hike.

The guides and the group help make Active trips so special, and our guide, Cynthia, was a perfect example; knowledgeable and caring. She's the best.

This was my second Active trip and I'm ready to sign up for a third.”

“Peru is one of the most beautiful, fascinating, adventurous, warm countries that i have ever visited. This was an introduction that inspired me to learn more about this country and explore the rest of South America.”

  • Beautiful Patagonia

“Our trip was fantastic, a perfect introduction to a land that we would have hesitated to visit entirely on our own. Well planned and guided by highly skilled and delightful people. I highly recommend this organization.”

  • Best Trip Ever

“The Tortuga trip to the Galapagos was AMAZING! First off, getting to stay on the islands is a huge plus, that allows us to keep doing land based activities, or snorkeling off of the beaches into the evening. The land-based option also gave us a chance to dine at the local restaurants every night.

My favorite night was spent on the quiet beach of Floreana island. We enjoyed a great night watching the sunset on the beach and sharing stories with our tour group. The next day we were right back at it doing some kayaking and snorkeling.

Nick, our Active guide, went above and beyond in taking care of our group. He made sure we all got to experience the thrills of South America every day, and always knew where to take us on the islands to show us a special time. Our naturalist tour guide, Danielle, did a great job keeping things moving while providing insight and humor to keep the mood ever light.

It was obvious during the tour that the Active team has worked hard to establish some great relationships on the islands with the local community and that gave us the opportunity to do some extraordinary things on the islands. From getting to go on some off the track hikes to dining at local places, I really felt like I was being shown a unique trek while on this tour.

I have traveled across Europe, Asia and the South Pacific, and I can honestly say this was my favorite tour ever. The combination of the Active team, the group of people Active attracts to their tours, and location cannot be beat.”
    – Colorado, United States Tortuga, January 2012
  • Very active and fun adventure but no tapir

“I loved this super active adventure from riding down Cotopaxi to climbing up to the Antisana Glacier! Climbing the waterfalls was awesome! So was the canyoning. Even liked the bats which were buzzing overhead. Our guide Jhayro was so attentive and generous! And the local guides were hilarious and extremely knowledgeable. Could do with a return to the thermal baths at Papallacta. So restful after a week of streeeeeeeeeeeeetching my "talents"!”
    – California, United States Tapir, January 2012
  • A cultural adventure!

“The variety of experiences, sights and sounds was fantastic! The guide was knowledgable and shared a great deal with us. He also went above and beyond to resolve some challenging situations with luggage and left items. It was a memorable experience for our entire family!”
    – California, United States Capybara, January 2012
  • Is there a more spectacular place on earth?

“If there is, I haven't seen it, and I've traveled a lot. Words and photos can't begin to convey how breath-taking Patagonia is, and with Active, we could not have gotten a closer look. There's a lot to experience, and in a short time for such a large area, I left knowing I had seen the highlights. Active is experienced, professional, and most important, fun. Thanks for a really memorable adventure!”
    – New York, United States Condor, January 2012
  • quiet your mind and open your heart

“I was expecting the worst weather and was surprised by the beautiful blue skies and sun each day. Every moment I had my breath taken away by all the beauty that was around me at each turn. I was so trilled to be reunited with the most amazing young women and guide Cynthia. A true jewel to your company her love for this country is contagious and made me want to cash in my ticket home and stay and continue to hike this powerful land and feel its energy under my feet as well as reaching for the top of each peak I was blessed to see and breathe into my soul. Thank you again for yet another fabulous active adventure, and more in the future to come.”
    – New York, United States Condor, January 2012
  • Trip of a Lifetime!

“This trip was so much more than what I was expecting. I was able to completely detach from the reality of my life because everything was taken care of. Our group was amazing and Nick made sure we all got what we needed. Daniel was a great tour guide who was able to work well within the unique personality of our group.”
    – Georgia, United States Tortuga, January 2012
  • Our trip into Patagonia Argentina and Chile was a trip of a life

“The weather was unusually warm with a cool breeze, making the trail ideal for hiking, viewing the sureal scenery, and even dipping toes into a frigid glacial lake. The trip was fully booked; there were 12 of us total with people from the US, New Zealand, Australia and even Finland. With such a diverse group, we were all amazingly compatible, and friendships were quickly made. Our guide Cynthia helped keep things running smoothly and showed us some amazing sights and pointed out details of the land around us that we might have otherwise missed. Even though this trip was a bit more expensive than the other options we reviewed, I think it was well worth it. We had a limited amount of time available to spend, and Active South America consolidated some of the best areas to visit with travel arrangements included, making our action-packed adventure run smoothly.”

  • Awesome trip

“We need to congratulate on the choice of Carlos as guide. He did an excellent job! He was able to adapt the trip's itinerary to our needs and the availability of options. He genuinely cared about our well-being and satisfaction. On top of this, he was a very pleasant person to be around, he played with our kids, cared for the poor and old people we encountered and gave us such a wealth of information about the history of Peru and its people and the modern Peru. He even organized a typical American Christmas dinner!”
    – Pennsylvania, United States Capybara, January 2012
  • Condoring it with Cynthia

“The condor has a view like no other creature of the beauty of Patagonia. But hiking and trekking it with Cynthia is just about equal to that - she and her guides lead us to some of the most magnificent views in all the world!! And the food and lodging ain't bad either:-) A highly recommended trip for those who like to wander.”
    – New York, United States Condor, December 2011
  • Jay's thoughts

“This was the first guided trip (of this variety) that I have taken in a foreign country. Ultimately all my expectations were met and my overall reaction was and is quite favorable. I expect that I will be joining Active in the future. Thank you for a memorable experience.”

“I had a fantastic time on the Jaguar trip. The activities were fun, the local guides were great... I saw far more on this trip than I ever would alone. • From Jungle to Glacier

“The trip was filled with excitement and challenges. The guides were all delightful. By noon time one day, we had already done a bike trip, a zip line and white water rafting. It was amazing. Being afraid of heights as I am, I still did things like climbing waterfalls and the reverse canyoning. Food and accomodations were great. Even the weather co-operated fully.”

  • Swimming with Sea Turtles -- a dream come true

“Who could guess that a little old grandma from the Prairies in Central Canada would be swimming with turtles? And that is not all -- the animals and birds were amazing, the volcanoes were amazing, the landscapes were amazing, the Islanders were amazing. The trip was (have I mentioned) amazing!”

  • I loved the places we visited in Peru on this Jaguar trip!

“Machu Picchu was everything and more that I expected, and I loved all the towns and places we visited. I was particularly impressed with the Andes - I had not thought specifically about how impressive and beautiful they would be. The people were so colorful and industrious, warm and welcoming. The fumes from diesel fuel were difficult to deal with when walking around Cusco, Puerto Maldonado, Puno - most all towns with vehicles, but otherwise I enjoyed all of the exploring that we did. We were definitely kept active, and I enjoyed the variety of activities. I loved the Lares Trail, but would also entertain the Classic Inca trail if I do come here again. The altitude did have an influence on my appetite, sleep and energy levels - particularly by the end of the two weeks, so I would take extra measures in the future to combat my altitude fatigue! I would definitely recommend this trip for the adventurous, active soul!
What made this trip so fantastic, besides the places we visited, was our guide!! Sally is absolutely the best and most top notch guide that I have ever had on a trip! She was not only so organized, patient, responsible, mature, active and in great shape, but she was so knowledgeable about all aspects of Peruvian culture, the traditions, the history, customs etc. She was fun, funny, always available, knew and was well-liked by everyone we linked up with on the trip - other guides, restauranteurs, hoteliers etc. etc. I cannot say enough about what a treasure and gem she is. She definitely made our trip even more worthwhile!”

  • An Amazing Adventure!

“I've been wanting to visit Peru and Machu Picchu for many years, and signed up for the Jaguar trip, which included Machu Picchu, the Amazon and Lake Titicaca. Active did not disappoint. Having travelled with a number of other companies before, this was the most well-organized and fulfilling trip so far! To begin with, the home office personnel were incredibly responsive and the information provided was comprehensive. Once in the country, I felt like I could not have been in better hands with our group guide as well as the other local guides along the way. Our group guide was not only highly professional and a complete pleasure to be around (for days on end!), but was also an absolute wealth of information -- from the history, culture and politics, to the incredibly diverse plant and animal life. I chose the Lares trail, which involved traversing through villages and over mountain passes where we encountered local people where they lived and worked their land. Our time in Lake Titicaca also involved a soccer game with the locals, as well as dancing in the local attire and a home stay. As a result of having more interactions with the local people in their environment, I enjoyed a more intimate experience compared with my other trips. I feel like I was able to connect with the Peruvian people and the country, and left more enlightened about both. Overall, nicely balanced in terms of activities and very well organized/professionally executed. I would do it again, and definitely recommend this trip to others! I only wish that I would have had the time to visit the Galapagos as well! Heartfelt thanks for an Amazing and Active Adventure!”

  • Peru was a blast!

“We spent two weeks hiking, biking and exploring all of the amazing things Peru has to offer. Our guide Carlos was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and fun. It was a great group and a great trip.”

  • Tortuga trip

“Your company does an incredible job of being very well organized, using our time, and logistics. Using local guides and families make the trip so much more personal. I think you have a great co. and would definitely use you again. Currently thinking about going to Nepal w. you.”

  • Jaguar - this was a fabulous trip.

“I can't say enough good things about it. Peru is so beautiful. Sally was so knowledgeable and establishes such good relationships with all her clients and everyone she participates with. Everything was run right on time. All the activities and logistics were so well organized. I feel you go above and beyond in your service and will definately use you again for trips.”

  • Perfect Peru

“Just finished the 14-day Jaguar trip. What an awesome time we had. Everything was well organized and where it was supposed to be when it was supposed to be there. I have done 2 other "adventure tours" before and the activities, food and accommodations on this one were by far the best. Can't say enough great things about our leader and substitute mother, Sally. She arrived every day with a big smile and boat load of enthusiasm about the days activities and her countries marvels, history and culture. She was always looking out for us and like all good mothers, had eyes in the back of her head. She even knew when we snuck out of the hotel late to get one more Pisco Sour and watch the Peru / Paraguay football game with the locals. Despite the fact our group of 8 came from widely different backgrounds, and 4 of us came on our own, we connected instantly. Everyone looked out for each other and I now consider myself to have 7 new friends. We are already talking about new adventures together. Great Job Active South America and Sally.”

  • The Galapagos Islands were magical for me

“The Galapagos Islands were magical for me - as awe inspiring and interesting as I always thought they would be. The amount of activities was just right, as well as staying on land rather than on a boat! I found the fauna most interesting, but also loved the geography of the islands and the volcano hike on Isabela Island. Daniel was a terrific and professional guide - very knowledgeable, interesting and passionate about taking care of the Galapagos. He grew up with a naturalist father and understands about the ecology, conservation, preservation, scientific research, and all that goes into maintaining the important balances of the islands. We also had a great group of people to travel with!”

  • Peru is awesome so here are thoughts on making the trip awesome

“It is a great trip and Peru is a magical country. I just feel there are a few things that need tweaking and possibly different levels need to be offered so everyone has an awesome time. Some of the hotels were very average (and I'm referring to the bigger cities like Cusco). As I had been solo traveling for three weeks before hand and often stayed in hostels, it would be good to have hotels that had comfortable beds. Excellent meals on the hike and we tried some very nice restaurants. It was nice not to be restricted to a tiny menu like some other tour groups were! I would recommend your trip to others, but I would give them more info on the level of activity on the tour. I know I am unusual in the amount of exercies I like to do and the amount I like to fit into a holiday, but I had hoped that this may have been the tour that could give me this, especially given the price of the tour. But please don't get me wrong, I did have a wonderful time with wonderful highlights like hiking to 4700m with my pack, seeing Machu and paddling Lake Titicaca.”

  • Where do I begin....

“The way Cynthia looked after our group made a trip of a lifetime outstanding. Every aspect of the trip over delivered on my expectations... mountains, jungle, lakes and lovely people. My only regret is that now I know what is on offer and don't have the time or money to do more trips!”

  • Inca Steps

“A well-organised trip in amongst the chaos that is Cuzco. How all our bags made it from one trip to another never ceased to amaze us!! Must of been the well-oiled team at Active South America :) Peru is a beautiful country with stunning scenery and very passionate people, especially when talking about their ancestors. This was especially so with our guides, Julio, Cynthia and Paula in the Amazon, who were all very knowledgeable. For all the Incas' incredible masonry skills, with perfect joints and geometry, the "bloody Inca steps" (Julio's joke, which made us laugh) were a real challenge and will never be forgotten - a great holiday, thank you.”
    – Herts, United Kingdom Jaguar, October 2011
  • Galapagos - I had an OUTSTANDING EXPERIENCE!

“I loved the trip because we stayed in really neat little hotels so we could enjoy each of the islands. Danial, our guide, was superb. Our group of eight really clicked. We are getting together to go rafting in Idaho next July! I am going to book another trip with Active to go to New Zealand. Thanks Active!!! Kathy Curtis”

  • The Great Escape

“My roommate, Ethan, and I decided (very last minute!!) to travel to Peru together before we started first our full-time careers. We signed up for the Jaguar trip just seven days before it departed. We loved every minute of the trip, our guide, our fellow travelers and the culture of Peru. I would definitely go back and wouldn't do it without Active and their fantastic approach to adventure travel.”

  • Good food, guides were excellent.

“Was a great trip. Machu Picchu hike was beautiful. Liked 90% of the trip. Would change trip to Puno. I think flying there would be better. 7 hour drive is too long. Also bike riding is too short.”

  • Bucket list and Beyond!

“From arrival to departure - this trip was beyond expectations. Yes, it was active, but we were so well taken care of - thank you Arturo. Thank you for your sense of humour, understanding, knowledge and intuition. The biodiversity was incredible. The views forever imbeded into our memories; the people welcoming with an obvious belief in family and friends; the food an exceptional gastronomical experience we didn't anticipate. I miss ceviche and the opportunity to continue tasting over 2,000 potato varieties and pisco sours from the Amazon. Active does it best - thank you!”

  • All we had hoped for

“Sally, our new mum, guided us through each part of the adventure. The trail was a fantastic one off my bucket list. The adventure began and did not finish for the whole trip. Each guide we had helped us and the local Peru people are very proud of their history. We met like people and made friends that we enjoyed sharing our adventure.”
    – Cheshire, United Kingdom Jaguar, August 2011
  • A Dream Fulfilled

“After a lifetime desire of wanting to visit Peru, we finally made it and we weren't disappointed. We cant praise ACTIVE enough! Our guide was patient, knowledgeable and had all the qualities and more needed for an ideal guide. Cynthia made it a memorable experience for all of us. We can't thank everyone involved for making it such a fabulous time for our 4 year old! We'd like to thank ACTIVE for making it possible when we couldn't find a UK company!”
    – UK, United Kingdom Capybara, August 2011
  • Eco Tourism is a Way to Give Back

“I fell in love with the people of Peru. They work hard to maintain their culture and language. In this fast paced technologically advanced world we are losing sight of what matters most: community, pride in our differences, family relations, hard work and a love of the land and what it gives back to us. On this trip I felt immersed in all of it. Several times I felt that "overwhelming feeling of well being" that makes you know that you are alive and involved. I've already recommended this trip to my ACTIVE friends.”
    – California, United States Jaguar, August 2011
  • “I am looking for a more upmarket trip so this one was somehow not up to my standards especially the hotels and meals. I guess this may not be your fault. I enjoyed my experience in Galapagos and Active South American contributed to that.”
    – Taiwan, Taiwan Tortuga, August 2011
  • A holiday that exceeded all expectations

“Going to the Galapagos was a big decision as it is not the cheapest place to get to from Australia. After the trip with Active South America, we are telling all our friends and family that if they have ever thought about doing this trip, then go for it. We had the most marvelous time with experiences that beforehand we had only dreamed about. The amount of unique wild life, especially during the snorkelling trips, exceeded all expectations. To swim with juvenile sea lions, eagle rays, sharks, sea turtles, not to mention a myriad of fish, could not be experienced anywhere else. The walks and the land animals were also a great experience. Every day brought a new adventure and we smiled from the start to the end of the trip.”
    – New South Wales, Australia Tortuga, August 2011
  • The Inca Trail and Machu Picchu were great.

“The Inca Trail and Machu Picchu were great. Jualio our trail guide(spelling ?) was excellent and very knowledgeable. The bike ride to Cloud Lodge was great fun but concerned about safety for novices. The Amazonia visit was bit disappointing due to cold and wet weather. Very few animals. Need to cancel on Lake Titicacca was disappointing but appreciate reason (due to civil unrest). Yohn did a good job of finding alternate activities.
People need to be aware and prepare for cold temperatures when in Peru highlands ... and Amazon basin as was our experience. Will recommend Active to others.”
    – British Columbia, Canada Jaguar, July 2011
  • I will remember it for the rest of my life.

“The trip was really awesome, and I will remember it for the rest of my life. The only reason that I gave it four instead of five stars is mostly due to my own personal preferences and chance occurrences. If we were talking about the trip to Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail (and our guides), I would have to give it six stars--it was phenomenal! Now as for the rest of the trip, there was too much car travel. I am particularly susceptible to motion sickness and the trip to the jungle especially would have been a MUCH better experience if we had at least a flight back. Additionally, the bike ride was awesome, but way too long and probably not suited for the entire group. A shorter ride (2-3hrs vs 3.5hrs), better bicycle training, and an alternative option for the less experienced would help prevent a lot of grumblings and injuries. As for freak occurrences, the rain during the bike ride, the cold jungle, the sickness that followed, the raids in Puno that prevented us from seeing the ancient lake, and the snow and generally bad weather did not help the trip--but were by no means your fault. (Maybe having a more concrete back-up plan for each activity would be prudent, however). However, all in all, the trip was pretty amazing, with breathtaking views, physical challenges (see note below), and an intimate glimpse into a country's unique culture.
Sidenote: As for the "activeness" of the trip, I think maybe there could be an option for a more strenuous trip. I felt the amount of energy I exerted during the Inka Trail was what I would have liked to consistently have experienced the entire trip, but instead it felt like the rest was a piece of cake. Maybe this has to do with liability or with the age groups, but it's just a suggestion :)”
    – Arizona, United States Jaguar, July 2011
  • Our family had a wonderful time on the Cabybara trip.

“We traveled with a five year old and a thirteen year old. It is always a challenge to engage both age groups. This trip engaged both children. Our teenager stated it was his favorite trip and our five year old was entertained and happy throughout the trip. Our tour guide, Cynthia, was a great story teller for the children and ourselves. She was also very accommodating and entertaining. We would highly recommend this trip. Just be ready to be VERY ACTIVE!!!!!!”
    – Maryland, United States Capybara, July 2011
  • This trip was one to remember.

“As my semester abroad came to an early end in Chile, I was looking to go to Peru and see Machu Picchu. Active just sort of popped up and I went for it (with the help of the Active crew). I wasn't sure what to expect and I have been to some pretty cool places before, but this trip was one to remember. Yes, it rained AND snowed during the "dry season" but Sally didn't let it keep us down. She took care of any glitches before they even became glitches and was always there to answer questions or just talk to. Maybe one day when I grow up and actually have money I can come back and do another active trip...because I already know it'd be worth it.”
    – Colorado, United States Jaguar, July 2011
  • Capybara Family trip - July 2011

“Had an amazing time discovering Peru from the Amazon jungle basin, to its cities and the Andes mountains filled with Inca ruins. What friendly people live throughout the country from the cities to small villages, everyone makes you feel welcomed even with limited languages in common. My group and trip leader made the experience even better. Great group of people and Cynthia was an excellent trip leader, always happy to help with planning, questions or encouragement. I'm glad I was able to make a dream come true and walk around Machu Picchu and setting foot in the Amazon jungle!”

  • Really good Jaguar trip

“The Jaguar trip was really good. Unfortunately we had to make alternate plans for the latter part due to issues in Puno, but Yohn our guide did his best to fill in the gaps. Yohn was a great guide -- very personable and proud of his Peruvian roots. He made the trip memorable! I'd definitely travel with Active again!”

  • from 70 year old perspective

“This was an excellent trip and I knew going into it that I would not be participating in all of the activities. Pablo worked very hard and is a most enthusiastic guide. He took good care of me. Initially he tended to downplay the effort & time an activity would take, but I learned to ask better questions and to make my own decisions. It would have been nice to have at least one or two chances to swim off one of the beautiful beaches and there were opportunities to do do so with just a little tweaking of time. Water was not that cold and other people were in the surf, especially on Isabela. While the name is "active" even the younger folks expressed a desire for some laid back down time. Hotels were comfortable and meals were good. Nick took good care of us in Quito”
    – New Jersey, United States Tortuga, July 2011
  • This was a wonderful adventure.

“This was a wonderful adventure. Our guide Pablo took us on a journey back in time before man found the islands. He instilled in us a desire to protect our natural history not only in the Galapagos but in the areas that we live. The animal life is rich and wonderous and the outdoor activities bring you close to nature and God. The interpersonal experiences with your fellow adventurers and guide were priceless.”

  • Fantastic!

“When I went back to work after a week in Ecuador on the Tapir trip, my colleagues expressed concern about how exhausting it must have been spending a week cycling down a volcano, reverse canyoning, hiking on a glacier and white water rafting. Actually, I went back to work full of life after a great week travelling around fabulous Ecuador with a knowledgeable and fun guide!”

“I can't even begin to say enough about this trip. We saw way more than ever expected and our guide Zambo was BEYOND knowledgeable. Since this trip we have taken 2 other trips and have been longing for our encyclopedia human to answer all of our questions. Active & The Galapagos do not disappoint. Every person involved was amazing. Every place we went was educational and involved some sort of physical activity, which is exactly what we wanted. We highly recommend using this company.”

  • An Amazing journey with like minded people.

“An Amazing journey with like minded people. At times the Inca Trail was extremely difficult but what a feeling when you reach the saddle on that 2nd day. The whole group has bonded and we all helped one another to fulfill the journey of a life time.
Then the floating island and the people on Lake Titicaca - again nothing similar have I seen - a must see. The night on the Island was a challenge and you just realized how fortunate we are to be able to travel and learn about these people. They all so poor but extremely happy.”

  • The trip was amazing and challenging.

“The trip was amazing and challenging. The Peruvian people from the various cultures that I had the privilege of visiting were very friendly and gracious. The parts of Peru on this trip were quite varied in landscape, livelihood, food and people. I was impressed that all the guides were from the local area, very proud of their country, well trained, and very helpful. Places, activities, people, guides, and food were great.”

  • Overall experience

“I went into the Tapir trip expecting a relatively mild, sedate "adventure" tour. Pleasantly I found a lot of adrenalin producing moments in the beautiful country of Ecuador. Jhayro evaluated the fitness of our group and the need for adventure and he fulfilled all of our needs. My extreme compliments to Jhayro.”

  • Peru - a remarkable place!

“Trip to Peru with Active South America was fabulous! Hiking the Inca Trail, visiting Machu Picchu (and other Inca sites), seeing Cusco, biking in the Andes, seeing the rainforest, canoeing in Lake Titicaca and visiting the Uros and other islands in the lake were all remarkable opportunities to see unique and beautiful places as well as getting the know the remarkable Purevian people. Wish I could have stayed for a month!”

  • Jaguar - A good overall experience for sure.

“A good overall experience for sure. One thing I do appreciate about Active, is the type of people who travel. I enjoy the strong personalities and no bull-shit approach. Everyone meshed very well. You guys are lame to think that we should hike the Lares (Lazy trail). Liz spoke up for the group since we were all pissed that we were not given the Incan trail option. You led on prospective customers in believing that was possible. After purchasing the trip, you then did a bait and switch. I will be frank, that was the impression on us all. So, you might want to be CLEAR in letting people know that you need at least 6 months advanced notice for people to do that option. AND, if you do have the Lares trail for people, give them the option of the springs or REAL hiking. Hire two guides if people don't feel the need to be active; separate the groups. As much as the hike was brutal for me, it was worth it because we saw the most breath-taking beauty.
As far as the hike, there should have another guide with Arturo. What happened? Sick or no show is no excuse. He was overwhelmed with taking care of all of us. Get someone who is solid. Period. Arturo worked his butt off.
This trip definitely was not like New Zealand. Having one guide made it more fly by the seat of your pants experience. Arturo needs a satellite phone or some walkie-talkie. AND ANOTHER GUIDE to help him. And your city tour was an utter joke. We paid 80 bucks to have some woman sit in a cab (ok, a personal driver. It felt like a cab) with us. She had very little to offer in terms of knowledge of history and culture. She was polite however.”

  • This was a perfect trip for Helen and myself.

“This was a perfect trip for Helen and myself. We are keen travellers and we like to think of ourselves as being "active". This trip was certainly active and suited us down to the ground. To be able to travel, in the knowledge that the trip has been well planned and that our guides are always on hand made for a stress free experience. The mix of walking, sight seeing, cycling and even a dose of kayaking resulted in a brilliant introduction to Peru. Thank you for the opportunity!”

  • Jaguar - Worth the Thirty Year Wait

“I have dreamed of going to Machu Picchu for thirty years and I am so glad that my dream was fulfilled with Active Adventures. What a bonus to also go to the Amazon Jungle and Lake Titicaca. The whole trip was a visual banquet and Sally, our guide, made evey step of the way an utter delight. Every detail was taken care of. All we had to do was get up each day ready for adventure!
I am already excited about choosing my next trip with Active!”

  • An Awesome Experience

“The Jaguar trip exceeded our expectations in every way!! Sally, "Mama" is an amazing tour leader - friendly, calm, competent, knowledgeable, organized and attentive to every detail. Each aspect of the trip - hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, experiencing the Amazon rainforest at Refugio Amazonas, and the beauty of Lake Titicaca with its unique islands and people - was filled with amazing sights, activities, and friendly guides. We would be remiss not to mention the wonderful Peruvian food we enjoyed everywhere we went! It is delicious! “This trip was a gift to my 22 year old daughter upon her graduation from college. Just the two of us went and we both had a blast. We both enjoyed the trip immensely. Sally our guide was the best. Machu Picchu and the Lares trail were a definite highlight. The Peruvian Amazon river trip was a very close second. We would definitely take another trip with Active South America or New Zealand!”

“Of course, I wanted to take this trip to see Machu Piccu, and it was amazing! However, I didn't realize how much fun I would have visiting Cusco, the jungle and the family on Amantani Island in Lake Titicaca. Staying with the family was an eye opening experience - an opportunity of a lifetime to spend time with people who are not of my world. Unforgetable!”

  • May 1-14, 2011 Jaguar Adventure

“Where do I begin? Every part of this wonderful adventure offered through Active South America was fantastic. I have dreamed of visiting the various sites in Peru since I was a teenager (30+ years ago); this trip surpassed all my expectations.

Arturo was a phenomenal guide: I feel that I speak for everyone in our group when I say that we truly appreciated his historical knowledge, technical prowess, infinite patience, positive attitude, and most of all...his choices in restaurants! Arturo is a definite asset to his profession.

We were fortunate to have beautiful weather the entire trip. Machu Picchu was even more magical and magnificent than I had ever dreamed. Julio, our little group's Classic Inka Trail guide was a joy to be with. His infectious laugh and in-depth knowledge of the trail and surrounding areas made our trek interesting and fun. The side trip to Paulo's traditional Inka-style home was a pleasant surprise appreciated by us all. It helped bring history to life, and his hospitality warmed my heart.

I must mention the outstanding service provided by the Porters and Cook: they made this trek so enjoyably relaxing. There was always much merriment in the camp and on the trail. Gourmet meals and snacks (minus the parakeet seed trail bar, that is ;-) were a definite delight on the trail.

Having tea and hot wash water delivered to your tent was another luxurious treat that they spoiled us with. How will I ever be able to camp on my own again?? For me, the trek ended all too soon on Day 4 at the Sun Gate at dawn. I remember can they possibly top this experience? I was about to find out.

The Amazon Jungle portion of the trip gave us accommodations that were extravagantly relaxing. Once again, we had beautiful weather, which helped bring about our numerous monkey, parrot, caimen, and insect/spider/scorpion sightings; including several javalina and capybaras.

The greatest thing of all, and the least expected, was our jaguar sighting and subsequent photo opportunity! The big cat sat on the riverbank long enough for us to get numerous close-up shots of it. Arturo was as happy and excited to see it as we were. What a fantastic experience to see this beautiful cat in its natural surroundings!!

On the final leg of our journey we traveled to Puno and Lake Titicaca where we once again enjoyed beautiful, mild weather. The boat trip and kayak outing to the various islands helped emphasize just how large the lake is. After a long Upstate New York winter, it felt great to be out on the water again. I was literally and figuratively on top of the world!

Regarding our family stay: both Jennifer and I were pleasantly surprised that our family accomodations were so luxurious. We had our own beds, in a cozy second floor room with a balcony that had the most spectacular view of the lake. Julian and Lucia's house was warm and welcoming...and provided us a cultural experience that we will never forget.

Another experience that touched my heart and warmed my soul was when Arturo took my "toy bag" on our hike to Pachemama mountain. The two of us had such fun handing out the pencils, paper, and various toys to the little kids. They truly appreciated our little gifts of friendship.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the food experiences throughout our trip: They were awesome!! We visited a variety of local restaurants and markets. I can't say enough about the amazing variety of dishes that comprise Peruvian cuisine. Fresh fruits, vegetables and meats/fishes. There was something for everyone. Portions were good sized, and always served with a smile. The chicken and Alpaca in Cusco was outstanding...the trout and kingfish in Puno: fantastic...the seafood in Lima was scrumptious. I can't even begin to describe how wonderful their desserts were! If you are a bread-lover, beware: their breads are so delicious and tasty...BUT are usually only served at the morning meal! They had a sweet bread that we tried in a market in Cusco that I could have eaten all day was SO good!!

From the tastly cuisine to the phenomenal scenery, friendly people, and spectacular wildlife sightings...this trip most certainly surpassed all my expectations. My thanks to: Arturo, Julio, Daniel, Frank, Oswaldo, Julian, Lucia, and everyone else who made this the trip of a lifetime! May all your travels be filled with sunshine and gentle breezes!

  • Beautiful Country, Company rough around the edges.

“We are so glad we decided to explore Peru. The country was beautiful and our tour guide, Arturo was wonderful. The views of Machu Picchu and on the Lares Trail were wonderful. Some things like people getting sick, thus slowing hiking progress and a washed out campsite causing us to have to hike into the dark to find a new campsite could not have been prevented, but were handled well by our guide. Some other areas that could have been better managed were disappointing. We were supposed to have 2 guides, but had only one for the whole trip since someone called in sick and there was no back-up plan. I thought an established company should have a protocol for this, and even if there was a delay, a second guide should have been provided by the second day of the trip. This would have helped a lot during the unavoidable situations listed above. Another issue was that we originally signed up for the Inca Trail, but were put on the Lares Trail due to limited permit availability. We did agree to the Lares Trail, which has several routes. When talking with Active SA planning the trip we made it very clear that we wanted a challenge and beautiful scenary. We were not notified of our trail route until 8 pm the night before leaving on the trail. At that time, it was explained to us that we would spend half of the first day waiting around at some hot springs in a small town before starting the short trail to the first campsite. So, in effect, giving us only one full day of hiking. When asked why that route was chosen, our guide said it was the easier route. This was an unacceptable reason seeing as how we flew all the way down to SA for the primary purpose of an amazing hike, not an easy one. The good thing was that our guide, Arturo, accomodated our wishes and changed the route at the last minute to a more strenuous first day hike that would take us through some amazing terrain. The next day was an amazing and worthwhile hike, but was flawed due to our porters going to the wrong site for lunch since they had not been effectively informed of the switch. We were able to eat our trail bars for lunch and another hiking group gave us some bread and soup. This situation could have been avoided if our initial concerns and motivations had been considered when planning the route and then again prevented by explaining the trek plan to us before the night before the hike. I also think that staying in Aguas Calientes an additional night to see more of Machu Picchu would have been great since that place is soooo amazing you can't see all of it in one day. Ollantaytambo is a beautiful little town that we just slept in and left, but there are some beautiful hill ruins that I would have loved to venture around in rather than spend a free day in Cuzco, which is a hectic loud city. Our time in the amazon was great. We loved the lodge, and our guides were very skilled. Overall, we had a great trip, but there were things that went wrong that could have easily been prevented by better communication and back-up plans. We do want to go to Peru again, but will research other guide companies as well.”

  • What an experience!

“Flew to Lima! Got greeted by the nicest guide, Arturo, who accompanied us during the duration of our stay in Peru. The following 10 days were such an experience: jungle with night animal viewing and tree climbing, Machu Picchu with a breathtaking view, road trip to Puno with a stop at a local market with Alpacas and Llamas, Lake Titicaca with islands full of rich history and a final tour of Lima.
Accommodations were good but the highlights of the trip were the expertise of our guides and the hospitality of the Peruvian people.
thank for all paying attention to detail ACTIVE SOUTH AMERICA.
we will think of you for our future trips.”

  • Amazing

“When friends ask me to describe our trip that's about as explicit as I can get! This was such a wonderful experience for all of us it's hard to know where to begin.

From going to our guide's home to experience amazing home cooking, to the beautiful accommodations, to the flexibility the guide had in when and where we went, to watching avalanche, volcano and local individuals. This trip created some life long memories my kids, my father, my husband and I will cherish.”

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime trip that we will remember forever. We loved our guide and the entire trip. I don't think there was anything we would have wanted to change. The experiences we have had will have us laughing and talking for years to come.”

  • Cynthia was a fabulous trip leader.

“Cynthia Valaquez(sp) was a fabulous trip leader. Our group of 10 met up in Cusco, a delightful city and after a few days of exploring, hiking and biking we went on to climb the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, an amazing journey in itself. It took 3 nights and 4 days...the porters were incredible and the food was delicious. Machu Picchu is a dream city in the clouds of the Andes mountains. No picture does it justice. Now I understand the word "mystical". We also went to a lovely jungle lodge in the Amazon Basin and to Lake Titicaca where we visited several islands, kayaked, and spent time with a family on Amantani Island. The Uros reed floating islands were like nothing I have ever seen. I have a real feeling for the country of Peru and its wonderful people after this trip with Active South America.”

“What a fantastic trip - celebrating a big '0' birthday. Our guide, Zambo, was incredibly knowledgeable but also refreshingly honest if he didn't know the answer. He's going to look into the reason why the marine iguana, which is supposed to be vegetarian, was helping itself to the fish at the market in Santa Cruz! Evolution in the making...”

Swimming with sea lions, dolphins, turtles, a sea horse as well as the unique opportuniy to swim with a whale shark was surreal. Never a dull moment on land either with hikes, bikes and tours, while exploring and learning about the Galapagos endemic species. Thanks to Pepo for his brilliant and tireless guidance and leadership and Tim for organizing an amazing adventure. • Condor - Our guide Cynthia was the best tour guide I've ever had

“Our guide Cynthia was the best tour guide I've ever had. The logistics of the trip were flawless and all of the local guides she contracted were of the highest calibre specifically Jahid in Chile and Lucianao in Argentina. The group wanted for nothing and Cynthia's attention to the needs of each of the 13 guests was beyond all expectations. We all made lifetime friends that would not have been possible without Cynthia's ability to take away all of concerns of the trip”

“I signed up for this trip as a single, which both excited & terrified me as I had never travelled abroad alone. Upon arrival in Cuzco and after meeting our guide & the group I would spend the next 2 weeks with, I was immediately put as ease. This was an awesome experience! The people were great. The trip was so well planned. And the experiences were once in a lifetime. I will definitely recommend Active to friends & family and I hope to join Active again on another trip!”

“My trip to Galapagos was so amazing. From the very beginning down to the last night. It was so well organized and thought out. Our guide Pepo was incredible, he was so fun and extremely knowledgeable. We learned so much from him. Tim and Pepo made sure we had everything we needed. Everything was taken care of, we were catered to. Our excursions were so exciting, Pepo was such a pro in the water and showed us amazing wildlife. I can easily say this was the best trip I have ever taken. We couldn't have gotten luckier with the guidance chosen for us. I have nothing but exaltations for this Galapagos trip and the crew that made it possilbe!”

  • My dad and me in Patagonia

“We had an amazing time in Patagonia. Cynthia and all of the local guides (especially J) made it possible for both of us to participate in the trip to the maximum. I got in the long hikes, and my dad saved his knees so he could complete the W-hike. The care that Cynthia took of both of us allowed us to have this incredible time together that we never could have in any other way. I came home ready to take another Active Trip. People talk about life changing trips, and I never knew what they were talking about, but now I do.”

  • Active trips continue to amaze and exceed all expectations.

“Active trips continue to amaze and exceed all expectations. Just when I thought Active New Zealand was the trip of a lifetime and could not be replicated, along comes Active South America - Patagonia. This trip was just as unbelievable, fun, and memorable. Once again, I was extremely fortunate to be surrounded by fun, active, joie de vie group of travellers and another outstanding trip leader. Not enough words can describe Cynthia - a free spirited, passionate, generous, warm, caring, loving, and extraordinary special soul. She made us feel like a family and made it very difficult to part ways after only 14 days. She showed us why Pataganoia is such a special place and I cannot tell you how much I miss it so. Once again, I made wonderful friendships and hope to cross paths with each individual. Thank you for another life-changing trip.”

  • Survival of the Fittest

“The Tortuga tour engages the intellect, traveling on Darwin's path to evolution theory, the physical with multiple opportunities every day, and of course, the direct experience with Tortoise, Sea Lion, Marine Iguana, and the incredible bird populations. Pablo's knowledge enriched this experience while Tim and Crystal enured our safety and timely logistics. And by the way, i've snorkeled in the South Pacific for decades and this was the best week ever from the sharks, to the turtles, sea lions, iguana and more.”

  • Truly the trip of a lifetime! These are enchanted islands...

“Absolutely loved this trip and hardly know where to begin to describe its wonders. Active South America/Galakiwi was an inspired choice in terms of outfitter. Tim and Crystal were attentive and, with Pablo, went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure all of us had a fabulous time. Pablo was an absolutely outstanding guide - enthusiastic, knowledgeable, personable and thoughtful especially with our group of older travelers. Snorkeling with sea lions, sea turtles and Galapagos sharks, a plethora of tropical fish and a wall of coral was amazing. We were fortunate to have a pod of Orcas play around the boat for almost an hour - mesmerizing. We also saw dolphin at play and numerous marine birds including blue footed boobies, pelicans and frigates plus many other birds, of course - finches, yellow warblers, vermilion fly catchers among them. The marine iguanas were my personal favorites. The captain of the boat was highly skilled and with his crew made the passages enjoyable. The biking, kayaking and especially the hike up Volcano Chico were memorable as well. Not to mention wonderful meals at outdoor restaurants, sunsets on the beach. It was a milestone birthday for my husband, Sherwin Cotler, and Tim and Crystal of Galakiwi made sure we enjoyed a festive dinner complete with delicious chocolate birthday cake and serenaded by the owner of the restaurant in Quito. It was perfect! We'll recommend this trip to all our friends. Many thanks for this trip of a lifetime!”

  • Claudia's Galapagos adventure

“Tim and Crystal were truly marvelous trip coordinators and guides. Pablo was incredible; attentive to everyone, exceedingly enthusiastic, eager to share his considerable knowledge of the history, flora and fauna and sealife of the islands, and patient beyond belief. One of a kind.”

  • Saving the planet

“I was very impressed with the staff and their knowledge. I had heard about the tameness of the wildlife, but to experience it directly was incredible. But what most impressed me was the grand experiment of humans and their environment. The synthesis of the Ecuadorian government, the Marine Park, community groups, and other NGOs all working to create a balance between people and this incredible environment. The world is watching.”
    – Colorado, United States Tortuga, March 2011
  • A rare opportunity to enjoy a truly enchanted experience

“Nothing you read about can prepare you for actually seeing the Galapagos firsthand. Walking among sea lions and marine iguanas, witnessing the vast extremes betweens the different islands, and feeling the closeness with nature as soon as you get to the National Park. I couldn't have been more impressed with the knowledge and passion of our guide and had all of my expectations met above and beyond what I thought would be possible!”

  • Galapagos Islands - Sherwin Birthday Club

“Thursday, our group flew to Isla San Cristobal, the easternmost of the Galapagos Islands via Guayaquil and checked into the Casablanca hotel in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. At lunch we met our Park guide Pablo, our dive master Franco, and Crystal, wife of New Zealander Tim, who owns “Galakiwi”, our cleverly named travel company for this trip. After lunch, we bicycled from the island’s highlands to its lowlands, passing through El Progresso, an old company town where the workers murdered the sugar magnate who employed them in 1904. We stopped at La Loberia beach to meet the sea lions (which outnumber the people on San Cristobal), watch some marine iguanas fighting (March is mating season) and began our bird watching list (see Appendix). At dinner, Sherwin was feted by fellow traveler Kathleen with a rap song about his passions, another birthday gift.

Friday, some of us went scuba diving and others went snorkeling at Isla Lobos and Kicker Rock. We all saw Galapagos sharks, white tip sharks, a hammerhead shark, and green sea turtles. While scuba diving, I saw a sting ray, a manta ray and an eagle ray, along with many grunts, King angel fish, puffer fish, parrot fish and some orange and purple soft coral growing on the sheer walls of Kicker Rock. In between dives, I snorkeled briefly with “blue fin” Tim, but could hardly keep up with his pace, due to the enormous size of his swim fins. On the way back to Port, we saw a pod of orca whales, numbering at least seven individuals. It was a good day for the sea lion pups to stay on the sidewalks of town! We had 15 minutes to ditch our swim suits and assemble for a trip to the Darwin Interpretive Center, which was a very hot and very interesting place covering both the human and natural aspects of the Galapagos Islands. How were the Galapagos formed? One day millions of years ago, they weren’t there, then the next day, whole landmasses welled up out of the ocean: Molten islands, boiling and slopping about on the surface until they set. Half of the group went back to the hotel to escape the heat, but Frank and a few others climbed Frigate Hill with Pablo to see the harbor and the sunset.

Saturday, we traveled by boat to Isabella Island via Entebel (birds), Champion Beach on Floreana Island (snorkeling), and Devil’s Crown (an underwater volcano crater). During our snorkel, we were buzzed by sea lions and once underway again, we passed through a school of dolphins. Before dinner we visited the local pink flamingo colony. We spent Sunday hiking on the Sierra Negra volcano, which rises nearly a mile above the ocean floor (round trip eleven miles and two 600 foot elevation gains, with the high point on the caldera measuring 3315 feet per Frank’s GPS). This volcano last erupted in 2005 and its lava blackened crater is the second largest in the world (seven miles wide). We lunched under an isolated tree called “El Jaboncilla” whose shade was very much appreciated, then walked across lava flows of various ages, some of which reached the sea. It was a landscape of black and red rock and very little vegetation, just a few ferns and cactuses.

Monday morning we toured Port Villamil’s bay in boats, then disembarked on Isleto Tintoreras to see marine iguanas nesting. Afterwards, we snorkeled in the bay to watch them swimming – they eat sea grass off submerged rocks – a regular convoy. We also saw green sea turtles sleeping on the sandy bottom. After lunch, we hiked to a giant tortoise breeding center, where they are incubating tortoise eggs until the babies hatch and grow shells hard enough to survive attacks by domestic animals like dogs, cats, and pigs, then they are released. Following ice cream at the Center, Bronwyn (Sherwin’s wife, no “Winnie” jokes please) and I went to the Wall of Tears, built when there were penal colonies on Isabella. The road to the wall was built by the US Navy during WWII to access radar stations that were monitoring approaches to the Panama Canal to protect it from Japanese air attacks. On our way back to our hotel, we saw five wild giant tortoises, a testament to the success of the breeding center.

Tuesday morning, we departed Isabella for Isla Santa Cruz, a two hour crossing rough enough to make me sea sick. Upon on arrival, we visited an impressive lava tube in the highlands, which was only discovered in the 1980’s when farm animals started falling into it. The interior coolness of the lava tube was most welcome, since it was about 90 degrees Fahrenheit outside and 90 percent humidity! Then we walked through an area where a farm borders the National Park and wild tortoises wander freely between the two jurisdictions. After a fresh fish lunch, we lounged in our hotel “Lobo de Mar” because many businesses were closed for Fat Tuesday. Some of the group went kayaking at Tortuga Bay, but I stayed behind to watch the daily catch of tunas and rockfish come in for filleting at the fish market, a process made much more amusing by the crowd of pelicans, seals, gulls and iguanas waiting for their share of the offal.

Wednesday, we went to the Darwin Research Center to see more on captive tortoise breeding, a land iguana (orange, unlike the black and gray marine iguanas), and to see Lonesome George (the only tortoise from Isla Pinta left in the world, age estimated to be between 90 and 100 years). Repeated attempts to breed him to females with similar DNA have failed, but we watched him trying to mate with a new arrival! After lunch, we left Santa Cruz to return to San Cristobal by boat and stopped to snorkel at Santa Fe Island. There, we saw a huge school of black striped selama fish, a sting ray, a shark, and the ubiquitous green sea turtles and sea lions. It was awesome to watch Crystal free dive into the fish school and watch them part for her. By the end of this trip, Frank and I had 37 new birds on our list, and we learned that all finches in the Galapagos Islands are collectively called Darwin finches, but they are listed separately by their real names in our list.

On Thursday, we flew back to Quito and enjoyed our final group dinner with birthday-man Sherwin. On Friday, we flew home from Quito via Miami and Dallas. On our 7 am take-off from Quito, I could see four snow covered volcanoes out my plane’s window and later, I saw the Panama Canal as we flew over it. I look forward to reliving this great trip at the post trip party to be themed “Survival of the Fittest”.”

  • Light Footprints

“This was not a trip. This was a life enriching journey providing a better external and internal understanding of the symbiosis and balance of all living things and our inter-relatedness. This was seen through both evolutionary change over time, and stability over time. How incredible to see a light human footprint in the midst of the still existent beauty, calm, and undisturbed wonders of the Galapagos Islands. It was exquisitely special!”

  • A responsible company which has something great to offer.

“Hi, My trip to Peru (Jaguar trip) and Galapagos (Tortugua trip) were EXCELLENT
    from all points of view.
    1- great guiding
    2- great exploration
    3- great ACTIVE rhythm
    4- great group dynamic
and I should say that the staff, mainly Sally (Jaguar trip), care a lot. At beginning because of the altitude with a negative physical reaction I ended up dehydrated, in addition I lost my luggage. The Cusco staff of Active and Sally took very good care of me and what could had been disastrous turn up to be great. I owe much to Sally. Muchas gracias. I wish I would be thirty years less! The Galapagos part was more smooth, mind you I had much difficulty with the snorkeling at first.
I received the proper help and guiding. I have learned to love snorkeling. At Galapagos Pablo and Ted and the office staff (a young women) were very nice people. Pablo was also very knowledgeable. Nothing but the best! I am working at Parks Canada as a guide interpreter and I can recognize competent people in the field of guiding. I am coming back with the strong impression that Active South America and its staff is a responsible company which has something great to offer.

“Politics being what they are around the world, we found ourselves on a Friday night in Argentina redirecting our Condor trip at the very last minute to the Jaguar excursion. A strike prevented travel to southern Chile, but Active South America did a superb job of redirecting our itinerary to join the Jaguar group in Peru. We had a great adventure exploring Peru, particularly the Lares Valley in the company of our passionate and fabulous guide, Sally. It was an entirely different trip - and equally as great as we expect Patagonia to be on our next trek to South America!”

“They say that in Peru you become awakened. I must say I have seen what they mean. From the moment you step off the plane, you cease to be an American or an Aussie, or wherever you are from and become a Peruvian. The people welcome you as one of their own. The culture makes you want to be a part of it. Our guide, Arturo was the best. When my luggage was lost, he himself became as tenacious as a jaguar to get it back.”

  • Tortuga with Pablo

“We were fortunate to have Pablo as tour guide becasue he is a graduate biologist. His knowledge of flora and fauna is quite complete. His attentiveness to our comfort was also exemplary. Contacts between marine life, land creatures, and all those things that fly were over the top. Definitely a trip for anyone who values imtimate contact with nature and preservation of diversity in living things.”

  • Our guide was the best aspect of our trip.

“Our guide was the best aspect of our trip. His knowledge of nature, taxonomy, birds, geology and ecology combined with his enthusiasm and passion was outstanding.”

  • Our guide, Pablo, made the trip forever memorable.

“Our guide, Pablo, made the trip forever memorable. His passion for the nature and the people of the islands was very strong. His knowledge was impressive, as he handles all of the questions very strongly. I would strongly recommend this trip to my friends.”

  • Galapagos exceeds expectations

“The close up contact with nature and wildlife was fantastic! The history of the people and culture of the people who currently or previously inhabited the Galapagos Islands was unexpected. There were many activities, yet the intensity was flexible to allow for various levels. I wouldn't trade the island-based trip or the knowledgable and personable guide for anything.”

  • Amazing Peru

“Peru was nothing short of amazing. The same can be said for our guide, Arturo, who is everybody's best friend and can go from full crisis-solving mode to telling wonderful jokes and back again in the blink of eye whenever needed. The trip put together a whirlwind tour of the great and diverse offerings of the country. This is certainly one of our greatest family adventures.

My only complaint is that this literally was not the tour that we ordered. We decided on and paid for the family trip, but that was canceled due to too few participants. With non-refundable tickets to Lima in hand, we were offered and accepted an abbreviated alternate tour, which had a few special challenges for kids such as a bicycle several sizes too large and nights that were altogether too short. That said, the challenges were overcome and the awesome experience remains.”

  • Beautiful Patagonia

“If you are thinking of going to Patagonia, Active South America is the best way to go. You will have many different activities and the services of a knowledgeable and friendly guide. This is a great way to see part of Chile and Argentina. We had a wonderful time and may be back for a different trip in the future.”

  • A mystical experience

“It was a really wonderul experience. We thoroughly enjoyed participating in all the activities. The highlight was the trek to Macchu Picchu. I also thoroughly enjoyed the kayaking. The jungle trip was enjoyable, not exactly active, but rest and relaxation. The guides, particuarly Arturo, was outstanding. The bottom line is would I do it again - you betcha and with you guys. Thank you very much”

  • a wonderful experience

“I completed this trip with my wife, Carol, and I endorse her comments entirely. Arturo is a unique individual and everyone in our group loved him and respected him. He was the key essential to the overall success of the trip”

  • Amazing from start to finish!

“I wanted to experience the Galapagos for twenty years, and I am so glad I decided on the Active South America trip. They communicated well so we were prepared, and our naturalist was OUTSTANDING. I loved staying on the islands and getting a feel for the true culture, and spending my money in a way that impacts the locals of the Galapagos. This was the trip of a lifetime and I am already recommending this to my friends!”

  • Severely disappointed

“I took your Tortuga trip in the Galapagos a few years ago. It was the first time I'd done a group tour, and I was a bit apprehensive. But Nick White was wonderful, and it was such a delight to be able to depend on someone to take care of the little details that can detract from one's enjoyment of a vacation. So when I was considering visiting Peru, I really didn't consider any other companies - if I went, I was going to go with Active.

Well, the one thing I can say about this trip: It gave me an even greater respect for Nick and all that he did. The guide who led our trip, Carlos, was clearly underprepared and was given insufficient support from the central office. He often seemed confused, stressed, and uninformed about the specifics of the trip. He also seemed to have a great deal of difficulty keeping to a schedule. I recognize that things do not operate the same way in Peru as they do in the states. However I did notice that whenever we were working with one of your subcontractors, things went a lot more smoothly. Also, a Gap Adventures group was on a trip that almost exactly paralleled ours, and we consistently saw them leaving hotels at the time WE had been scheduled to leave while our group waited 30, 60, or 90 minutes for our guide or a vehicle, to arrive.

As I tend to be an active journal keeper, I'm able to provide a day-by-day description of issues that arose:

Day 1: Sunday, Dec 19. I arrived at Cuzco airport expecting to be met by a guide. After spending about 25 minutes looking for the Active sign, I decided to catch a cab - at that point I heard someone calling my name, and met Carlos for the first time. He dropped me off at the hotel, leaving before I had gotten a room or a key, saying he'd be back to meet the group at noon.

The group gathered in the lobby at noon. We had plenty of time to introduce ourselves before Carlos showed up at 12:30. The visit to the market and lunch were both very good, and then we headed to Saqsayhuaman. When we got there, we discovered that we did not have admission tickets. Carlos first asked if anyone knew if the tickets were included or we were supposed to buy them ourselves. We all said they should be included. He asked if we'd mind paying for them and he'd try to get money from Active to pay us back. He then left us for about half an hour while he made phone calls to try to sort it out. He then said we might have luck at a different entrance and walked us up the car entrance to another gate, where we were in fact, able to get tickets.

We got back to the hotel about 6:30, and Carlos told us to meet in the lobby for dinner at 7:30. The entire group assembled by 7:25 and we waited till about 8 for Carlos to show up. Dinner was fine.

Day 2: Monday, Dec 20. Carlos had told us we were being picked up at 8 am. We all brought all our bags down to the lobby at 8. Carlos was there at 8, however, he told us that he'd forgotten to tell us that we were only taking the things we would need for the Inca trail, and we should leave the rest at the hotel. The packs we were supposed to take on the trail (for those of us who were renting packs) were not at the hotel yet. He handed out garbage bags and told us to put our Inca stuff in these. The bags & the bus showed up at about 9:30. The bus was not big enough to hold the bags, so these were put into a car belonging to Carlos' cousin. Due to the disorganization of the packing, several people ended up not bringing items that they needed on the trail - this probably would not have been an issue if we had had sufficient time to pack in our own rooms.

Our bags were not in Ollatambo when we arrived, but did show up during dinner.

Day 3: Tuesday, Dec 21. We were scheduled to leave at 8 am, but the bus didn't arrive till after 9:30. We did a short bike ride, and then went hiking among the ruins. We were supposed to go biking again after the hike, but Carlos pointed out that it was difficult and time consuming to take the bikes down from the top of the bus, and so suggested that we skip it.

Carlos was not going to hike the Inca trail with us, but said he'd meet us at the Sun Gate at Machu Picchu on the morning of Day 7.

Day 4, Day 5. No problems. Despite rain, varying levels of fitness of the group, and exhaustion, Julio & Romulo (our guides) did a great job. Tents, meals and departures were all on schedule.

Day 6: Friday, Dec 24. This was probably the most inexplicable day of the trip, and would have benefited from both preparation & flexibility. We were awakened at 3 am, and rushed out of our tents. The porters took down our tents as quickly as possible - mine was taken down while I was in the bathroom, before I had finished packing. My personal items (glasses, contact lenses, toothbrush, and feminine hygiene products, a Swiss army knife, etc) were still in the tent - they were never returned to me. After a very small breakfast (one pancake, the only small meal we were served on the trip), we moved to the restaurant to get out of the rain. At this point it was about 3:45, almost two hours before the checkpoint opened, and it was pouring rain. Everyone was crowded into the restaurant for over an hour for no reason we could discern.

After this we hiked down to Machu Picchu in the rain. We didn't see Carlos anywhere. We were supposed to spend a couple of hours at the site, but given the rain (and the fact that we'd been hiking in the rain for three days) our group requested a shortened tour and then the opportunity to go someplace indoors. Julio did a great job of getting us to the highlights and providing context in about 45 minutes, and then we caught a bus to Agua Caliente. We arrived at about 10 am. Still no Carlos. We were all very hungry (having only had a small breakfast seven hours earlier), and wanted lunch, and then to return to Cuzco. However, we were told that we were scheduled on a 4:30 train, and that we would be ordering lunch at 1 pm. This, despite the fact that we were in a restaurant that would, presumably serve food at any time. Most of us ended up buying food. And we played cards for several hours.

Carlos showed up at 1, providing a long-winded apology and a more long-winded explanation about how it wasn't his fault that he was only showing up now. We asked if there was a way for us to head back to Cuzco earlier than 4:30 - he said no. We arrived back at Cuzco at about 9:30, and had dinner starting at 10:30.

Day 7: Saturday, Dec 25. Our free day. No problems, although several of our group were pretty sick. Shawn in particular was feeling awful and talked to Carlos about seeing a doctor. He said she probably just had "slow digestion" and that it was common.

Day 8: Sunday, Dec 26. We gathered in the lobby for the bus which was supposed to leave by 9 am, but showed up at 9:30 and left about 10. At the airport, after we had each checked in separately (Nick had printed us boarding passes, which saved a lot of time), Carlos told us that he didn't have money for airport tax, and we'd have to pay our own, but he'd pay us back. On checking in, several of us noticed that our return flight was at 2 pm.
Because we'd gotten such a late start (the Gap group had taken a 9 am flight), and because the rains had washed out part of the road, we ended up not getting to the rainforest lodge until well after dark. Yuri and Aldo (our rain forest guides) did a good job of providing us with information about the amazon, and of finding interesting animals and plants (especially after it got dark).

Day 9: Monday, Dec 27: Shawn was significantly sicker than she had been. Our guides at the lodge, Yuri and Aldo, did a great job of explaining things and finding cool animals for us to look at. Over dinner, Carlos gave another long apology speech to the group, and explained how none of the problems were actually his fault. He told us we would be leaving at 7 the next morning to catch a noon flight. Yuri told us that we could sleep in, as we were catching the last flight of the day, around 2 pm. Carlos seemed confused by this.

Day 10: Tuesday, Dec 28: We had breakfast at 7:30 and left the lodge about 8:30, getting to town at about noon. Carlos told us we'd have a tour of the town, then catch a plane at 2, then get a box lunch on the bus. We suggested that since we had a couple of hours to kill, and we were all hungry, it might make more sense to have lunch in town, but Carlos indicated that there was no flexibility in this. At the airport, Carlos told us again that he didn't have money for our airport tax, and we'd have to pay our own.
We returned to Cuzco about 4:30 pm, and Shawn insisted on seeing a doctor. She was immediately put in a decompression chamber, and told she was too ill to fly all the way back to the US, but would fly to Lima the next day. Karen (her partner) would fly with her. At dinner, Carlos told us we were leaving at 8 the next morning.

Day 11: Wednesday Dec 29: My phone rang at 6 am, telling me the bus was here. I thought perhaps it was for the Gap group (as they seem to be heading out earlier than us) but I was told, no, it was for Active. So I jumped up and got into the shower - the phone rang again. It was Carlos, going into one of his long winded apologies. I told him not to bother apologizing, just to tell me if our bus is here or not, because if it is, I want to wash out the shampoo, and if it isn't, I want to go back to bed. He says it is, and starts explaining how it isn't his fault. I hung up and got back in the shower. He called again & I told him I really didn't want to talk to him. Finished my shower, and got all my bags downstairs by 6:30. None of our group was there. Carlos said the bus was actually for Karen, who was catching a 7:30 plane - even though Shawn wasn't going to be leaving till noon. Karen said she wasn't leaving without Shawn, and both Carlos & the Cuzco
office were completely unhelpful - she ended up having to go to the airport to change her ticket.
Carlos explained that he'd been up all night with Shawn & Karen (who later told us he hadn't been), and so he needed to go home & pack and spend some time with his family - he got back about 9:30. The bus, on the other hand, had shown up on time at 8 am.
We had a long ride to Puno - we were able to get out an bike for about an hour; the itinerary had promised a longer ride, but I guess since we'd started to late that wasn't really possible. It was a really nice bike ride though. There was probably a lot of interesting information we could have gotten about the are we were riding through (it was a very varied landscape and included a number of villages and urban areas) but Carlos slept through most of the ride & so was unable to provide any commentary.

Day 12: Thursday Dec 30/ Day 13: Friday Dec 31: No real problems. Oswaldo, our guide in Puno & on the islands was great, and the folks who put us up in their homes were just wonderful. At dinner on Friday Carlos gave us about 4 different times to meet to leave for the airport.

Day 14: Saturday Jan 1: We met in the lobby at about 8 am, and pretty much everyone in our group wanted to do the Lima tour. Shawn & Karen had already pre-paid for it, and were planning to meet us in Lima - we were all looking forward to seeing them. They had made it very clear to Carlos and to all of us that they wanted to do the tour. And 9 of the 10 remaining people in the group also wanted to do the tour, for a total of 11 people. Some of us hadn't pre-paid, but Carlos assured us that wouldn't be a problem. Carlos took us to the airport and gave a long speech about what a wonderful time we'd all had & requested that we all give him a good recommendation, and say good things about Active to all our friends.

When we got to Lima, we found Shawn & Karen. Supposedly they had called both Carlos & the Cuzco office multiple times, trying to find out where the tour met, but couldn't get any information. And it turns out the car they sent would only hold 9 of us, not all 11 of us. So two people had to miss the tour. It's not clear if they will be charged for it or not.
The tour was good; Vanessa did a fine job of explaining things.

Overall, the itinerary was well-planned, and your subcontractors were all great. But there needs to be a good deal more organization and communication between the Cuzco office, the guide, and the people who have paid a lot of money for the tour. The office really needs to do a better job of ensuring that there is someone involved with the tour who is capable of handling logistics, and of being flexible enough to take care of emergencies as they arise. This person also needs to be supported by the main office when things become too complicated (for example, when one of guests becomes extremely ill) so that they can continue to do a good job for the rest of the visitors.

Again, I'm very disappointed. I had great hopes for this trip, and have recommended Active to a number of friends in the past. Several others on this tour were also returning Active customers, and all of them commented how poorly this compared to their previous Active experience.

I hope you'll make the necessary changes to ensure that future trips go more smoothly.”

  • The trip was excellent

“The trip was excellent, and we thank you for providing an excellent guide, Cynthia. She had a small group made up of well experienced world travellers to deal with, and we appreciated her expertise in getting things done. We adapted well to unexpected situations such as the heavy rain on our first day at El Chelton, and Cynthia's decision to have pizza and wine at the hotel rather than going out for dinner was good for all of us. Throughout the trip, Cynthia was professional and perceptive of our needs; she was also candid about some of her experiences with large more challenging groups. If your travel company can make enough on small groups (4 - 6 clients per guide), please do so.”

  • Was glad I chose Active

“The trip was very well planned and we had really no problems. I talked with other in the Refugios that were with other groups, and they did NOT have the same experience. Cynthia was just wonderful as a guide, and she made sure we were all having a good time. I enjoyed all of the hikes, even when the Patagonian weather did not cooperate. I will never forget the first view of the Torres - it was worth all the hours in the air and all of the hiking - incredible ! This was my first time taking an adventure tour, and I'm so glad I did !!!”

  • Wonderful trip through Peru

“I really enjoyed our guided trip through Peru. All of the details were taken care of and we didn't need to worry about anything. There was a nice variety to the activities and what I felt was the perfect amount of free/rest time. A little more time in the rainforest would have been welcomed. Thanks Active for a great time in Peru!”

  • Active does it again.

“After having an awesome time on our Active New Zealand trip we were anxious to do another trip with Active. We eventually decided on the Active South America Jaguar trip to Peru. Apparently we weren't the only ones happy with Active since the rest of our group had also selected this trip based on their New Zealand experience. We couldn't be more happy with our trip and our tour guide Sally. The level of planning and execution that goes into the trip is incredible. The food that was prepared while camping truly was a gourmet experience and all the local restaurants we went to were wonderful. Even though the locations we visited were trip of the lifetime type of places the thing I most enjoyed about the trip was the cultural immersion that our guide provided. Her passion for her home and her desire to show us the real Peru gave us a very special experience. We are already looking into out next Active trip.”

  • Honored to have been to Galapagos

“The term I keep using to describe our trip to the Galapagos is that I was honored to have had the opportunity to visit this incredibly unique place. Traveling with Active South America brought the Islands to life in a way I had not anticipated. Our guide, Pablo, had such passion and interest in the environment and it was contagious. Going on a land based tour was the best way to experience the Islands. We were very peaceful as we watched visitors embark and disembark from dinghys while we sipped our beverages and watched the sunset alongside the residents. We got to see the Islands in a way that no boat based tour could. One of those unique moments was the catching a nightime Census parade and party on San Cristobal. Another was watching a pick up soccer game in a concrete amphitheater in town. The best was while at an early morning breakfast, we watched the lobster catch come in. When a man bought several lobsters, we were able to discern what restaurant he worked at and had fresh lobster off the grill that night for dinner. We really got to be a part of the Islands.
We were cared for every step of the way and didn't have to worry about anything. It was the trip of a lifetime!”
